América: ¿Uno o dos continentes?
America: One or two continents?

Para muchos, el continente Americano es uno solo; pero para otros no es así, ya que piensan que América del Norte y América del Sur son dos continentes distintos. ¡Éste es un tema de discusión que nunca acaba!
En los países Latinos, nos enseñan que América es el nuevo continente, y después de Asia, es el más grande del mundo. En cambio, en las escuelas de Estados Unidos, los niños aprenden que hay dos continentes americanos, el del norte – incluyendo el centro, y el del sur.
A mí me enseñaron que hay cinco continentes en el mundo: Asia, África, América, Europa y Oceanía. América está dividida en América del Norte, América Central y América del Sur.
Por otro lado, el término de “América” se usa comúnmente en referencia a Estados Unidos. Pero, aunque a algunos no les parezca, éste es un concepto erróneo, porque todos los que habitamos en este gran continente somos americanos, ya sea de EE.UU., México, Guatemala, Colombia, Venezuela o Argentina, por nombrar sólo algunos de los países que lo conforman. Así que para mí, y creo que para muchos de mis compañeros de trabajo y personas que conozco, América es un solo continente; aunque también respeto la opinión de los demás.
En fin, no debería importar si somos del norte, centro o sur, ya que todos formamos parte del Nuevo Mundo.

For many, America is a single continent, but for others is not so, because they think that North America and South America are two separate continents. This is an issue that never ends!
In Latin countries, we are taught that America is the new continent, and after Asia, is the largest in the world. In U.S. schools, children learn that there are two American continents: North America- including Central America, and South America.
However, in earlier times they were viewed as a single continent known as America, with this viewpoint remaining common in the United States until World War II. This remains the more common vision in Spain, Portugal and Latin American countries, where they are taught as a single continent.
I was taught that there are five continents in the world: Asia, Africa, America, Europe and Oceania. America is divided into North America, Central America, and South America.
Also, the term “America” is commonly used in reference to the United States. But while some do not seem to agree with me, this is a misconception, as for all those who inhabit this great continent are Americans. So for me, and I think for many of my colleagues and people I know, America is one continent. However, I respect the opinion of others.
In conclusion, it should not matter whether we live in North, Central or South America; we are all part of the New World.
