`El pasado martes, 8 de mayo, tuve la oportunidad de ir al Cementerio Memorial Park de Memphis y presenciar uno de los actos conmemorativos más bellos y solemnes en honor a nuestros héroes caídos, que murieron mientras cumplían su deber para resguardar la seguridad local.

Familiares, amigos, alcaldes, agencias y departamentos (policías, bomberos, etc…) del Medio Sur estuvieron presentes. Había un total de 300 personas aproximadamente.

Fue una experiencia única para mí y aunque no tengo a nadie en mi familia que haya perdido su vida de esta manera, siento que es mi obligación honrar a estos héroes caídos también, porque arriesgaron sus vidas sin importarles las consecuencias y se convirtieron en un gran ejemplo para la sociedad.

On Tuesday, May 8, I had the opportunity to go to the Fallen Heroes Memorial Service at Memorial Park Cemetery. It was a beautiful and solemn service in honor of our fallen heroes who died in the line of duty.

Family, friends, mayors, Mid-South agencies, and departments (police, fire, etc …) were present. Around 300 people attended.

It was a unique experience for me, and although I have no one in my family who has died this way, I feel it is my duty to honor these fallen heroes. They risked their lives regardless of the consequences and became a great example for society.

El caso Zimmerman – Martin se ha convertido en la noticia del momento. Toda la nación está hablando del tema; que si fue por defensa propia, que fue una acto racista, etc. El hecho es que un joven está muerto y otro está siendo investigado por las autoridades locales, estatales y federales. Y peor aún, hay unos padres que están sufriendo por la pérdida de su hijo y se sienten impotentes de ver que por la existencia de una ley, muy peligrosa por cierto, el presunto asesino todavía está suelto sin recibir castigo alguno.     

Para aquellos que no lo saben, en Florida hay una ley que se llama “Stand your ground” (defiende tu posición), la cual establece que si alguien ve que corre peligro de muerte tiene derecho de defenderse a como dé lugar, así tenga que matar al victimario.

Se han dicho muchas cosas sobre este caso, primero que Zimmerman, un vigilante que estaba patrullando la urbanización en ese momento, llamó al 911 para denunciar que había un sospechoso en la zona, caminando bajo la lluvia; un representante del 911 le dijo que no hiciera nada y que dejara de seguirlo, que la policía iba en camino. Después han dicho que Martin atacó a Zimmerman, por lo que éste, al tratar de defenderse, tomó su revólver y lo mató. En fin, nadie sabe en realidad qué fue lo que pasó y por eso siguen investigando. Y si Zimmerman, cuyo padre es blanco y su madre es hispana, no ha sido arrestado, es porque la ley que mencioné anteriormente lo ampara.

Es muy lamentable que cosas así estén pasando hoy en día. No podemos ni tenemos derecho de juzgar a los demás por su color, raza o religión; mucho menos podemos quitarle la vida a alguien porque nos parezca sospechoso o porque sabemos que hay una ley que nos protege.

Digan lo que digan, me parece que fue un asesinato cruel, injusto e innecesario. Este delito ha provocado la ira de muchos en el país y nadie va a descansar hasta conseguir que se haga justicia.

No podemos tomar la ley por nuestras manos, para eso está el gobierno. Hay que pensar bien antes de hacer algo de lo que luego nos sintamos arrepentidos, porque una vez hecho, ya no hay vuelta atrás.

Trayvon Martin - George Zimmerman

The Zimmerman-Martin case has become the news of the moment. As the nation talks about it, whether it was self-defense or a racist act, the fact remains that a young man is dead and another is under investigation by local, state and federal agents. As Martin’s parents grieve for the loss of their child, feeling of helplessness abound due to Florida’s “Stand-Your-Ground” law. This dangerous law dictates that a person has the right to stand his or her ground and “meet force with force” if attacked.  It is because of this law that charges have not been filed.

Many things have been said about this case, which started  on February 26^th  when Zimmerman, the accused and a neighborhood watch volunteer,  called 911 to report that there was a suspect in the Sanford area. Conflicting reports say that he followed Martin after warning him to stop, and now we have learned that Martin attacked Zimmerman, thereby prompting the “self-defense” shooting and no arrest as of today. Nobody really knows what has happened there and it is very unfortunate that such things can happen.

We do not have the right to judge others by their color, race, or religion; much less can  take someone’s life because he or she looks suspicious, or because we know that there is a law that will protect us.  To me, this is a case of a cruel, unjustified and unnecessary murder. This crime has angered many people in the country, and no one will rest until justice is done. We can’t take the law into our own hands, as that is law enforcements job. We need to think  twice before acting. Once something is done, there is no turning back.

Muchas personas piensan que el sistema educativo en los Estados Unidos es excelente, por ser una máxima potencia en el mundo. Pues, ¡déjenme decirles que no es así!

A excepción de la educación superior –que sí es buena- los niños que asisten a las escuelas primarias o secundarias no obtienen la atención requerida de parte de los maestros, y como tal, no aprenden bien lo que se les enseña. Muchos de los niños no saben leer bien a sus 15 años, no saben escribir con letra cursiva, y para sorpresa de muchos, no saben ni dónde queda Brasil, por ejemplo.

Al momento de llegar a la secundaria, los estudiantes tienen la opción de elegir sus materias. Cosa que los puede afectar drásticamente, ya que si no escogen las clases necesarias para una buena formación, su futuro podría ser más difícil a nivel profesional.

Esto es muy común en casi todas las escuelas públicas, sumándole el problema del salario de los profesores y todo lo relacionado a las políticas de cada sistema. Y Memphis es un vivo ejemplo, con la unión de las escuelas de la ciudad y del condado de Shelby. Una vez que esté todo esto finiquitado, este sistema escolar sería el más grande de la nación. Mientras tanto, ciudades alrededor de Memphis (pertenecientes al condado de Shelby) planean crear sus propios sistemas escolares, por el bien de sus niños y jóvenes.

Por otro lado, hay muchos padres que piensan que con saber leer y escribir es suficiente, y que lo importante es empezar a trabajar para producir. No se dan cuenta de que la mejor herencia que les pueden dejar a sus hijos es una buena educación.

Many people think that the educational system in America is excellent, being a leading power in the world. Well, let me say that it is not!

With the exception of college education, which is very good, children attending elementary or secondary schools do not get the required attention from teachers, and as such, do not learn well what we are taught. In fact, many children (even at 15 years old) cannot read well, cannot write in cursive, and some don’t even know where Brazil is, for instance.

High school students have the option to choose their classes, which can affect them in the long run, because if they do not choose the necessary classes for a good education, then their future as professionals could be more difficult.

This is the case in almost all public schools, adding the issue of teacher salaries and everything related to the policies of each system. And Memphis is a perfect example, with the merging of the City Schools and Shelby County’s Schools. Once this is finalized, this school system would be the largest in the nation. Meanwhile, cities throughout Shelby County are planning to create their own school system for the sake of their children.

On the other hand, there are many parents who believe that the most important thing is to begin working  and just learning how to read and write will be enough for them. They do not realize that the best legacy they can leave to their children is a good education.

De nuevo, la Perrera Municipal de Memphis se encuentra en la mira del público. Todos los medios están hablando de su última falla.

Ahora resulta que las personas encargadas de los animales en el refugio pueden hacer de las suyas y no tienen ni un poquito de consideración con estos seres vivos, porque sí, también son “SERES QUE SIENTEN”.

Por si no lo han visto, hay un video en la Internet que muestra cómo un empleado de esta perrera municipal saca a un cachorro de su jaula con un palo diana (palo con collar) y en vez de dejarlo caminar, lo arrastra por el piso y lo levanta como si fuera un trapo. Esta misma acción, tan inapropiada y sumamente inhumana, se repite una y otra vez por desgracia. Y digo “por desgracia” porque para estar viviendo en esas condiciones tan precarias y abusivas, es preferible estar muerto.

Lo siento mucho, pero para mí, y creo que para muchos de ustedes, esta situación es terriblemente inaudita y… ¡tiene que parar YA! Si las personas que están a cargo de la perrera no están calificadas para tal trabajo, o simplemente no les interesa el bienestar de estos animales, entonces no deberían estar en ese puesto. Y si no son amantes de los perros y gatos, por lo menos deberían ser más atentos y menos crueles. Piensen qué sentirían si fueran tratados de esa manera, ¿no les gustaría, verdad? 

La Ciudad de Memphis está llevando a cabo una investigación a fondo sobre este problema, pero si me permiten darles una recomendación, dejen que el lugar sea manejado por una organización privada. Tal vez, esa sea la solución del problema.

La Perrera Municipal de Memphis ha tenido problemas en el pasado, por usar a estos perros en peleas ilegales y por las pésimas condiciones a las que someten a los animales.

Once again, the Memphis Animal Shelter is at the center of a viral video that shows animal abuse at the facility. Turns out that people responsible for animals at the shelter do whatever they want, instead of caring for these poor dogs and cats. The abuse seems to go on!

In case you have not seen it, the video posted on the Internet shows a shelter employee using a catch pole on a puppy. The puppy is picked up with the pole and carried. The dog is never allowed to walk on its own. To me, it is better to be dead than be treated under such inhumane actions.

This outrageous situation must stop… NOW! If people in charge of the shelter are not qualified for such work, or simply are not interested in the welfare of these animals, then they should not be in that position. I bet they wouldn’t like to be treated that way.

The City of Memphis is conducting a thorough investigation; but I would like to recommend that the best solution is for it to be run by a private organization.
