En lo que va del año, son cinco manifestaciones sísmicas de gran magnitud las que se han reportado. Primero Haití, enseguida fue Turquía, luego Chile, la semana pasada fue México y los EE.UU. y esta semana es el Tíbet en China.
Más allá de los daños a la infraestructura física de las naciones, hemos tenido que lamentar bastantes muertos. Sin embargo, es cuando los países tienen construcciones muy viejas y con materiales poco resistentes a los movimientos telúricos, cuando las víctimas se acumulan en enormes cantidades. Los movimientos sísmicos de México/los EE.UU. y Chile, a pesar de ser de grandes magnitudes, no arrojaron la cantidad de víctimas que se han visto en los demás lugares. ¿La razón? La calidad de las construcciones.
Si esto es algo con lo que estaremos viviendo durante mucho tiempo, los gobiernos deberían empezar a tomar medidas para mejorar la calidad de las construcciones, haciéndolas más fuertes y resistentes a los sismos. Mientras tanto, nuestra solidaridad está con los tibetanos.

So far this year, five major seismic events have been reported. First Haiti, then Turkey and Chile, last week it was Mexico and the U.S. and now this week there has been one in Tibet in China.
Beyond the physical damage to the infrastructure of nations, we had to mourn many dead. When countries have very old buildings and people use materials less resistant to earthquakes, victims trend to accumulate in enormous quantities. The aftershocks from Mexico/USA and Chile, despite being of great magnitude, did not show the number of victims that have been reported in other places. What is the reason for this? It is the quality of buildings, nothing more.
As this is something that we’ll be living with for a long time, governments should start taking steps to improve the quality of buildings, making them stronger and more resistant to earthquakes. Meanwhile, our solidarity goes to the Tibetan people.
