Planned Parenthood is Now Offering Free Syphilis Testing

Planned Parenthood está ahora añadiéndole a su larga lista de servicios gratis las pruebas de sífilis; estos servicios son ofrecidos en su centro de salud ubicado en el 2430 Poplar Avenue en Memphis.
La sífilis es una infección de transmisión sexual que puede causar una enfermedad grave e incluso la muerte si no se trata. La examinación de aquellos que están en riesgo es crucial, ya que los primeros síntomas de la sífilis pueden estar ocultos o ser confundidos fácilmente con una erupción cutánea inofensiva. La sífilis es especialmente dañina si ha sido transmitida por la madre al feto durante el embarazo. Es por eso que las pruebas de sífilis son recomendadas para todas las mujeres embarazadas.
En el 2010, hubo 634 casos de sífilis reportados en el Condado de Shelby (de todas las etapas). El Condado de Shelby representó casi el 60% de todos los casos de sífilis en Tennessee durante ese año. La tasa de infección para todas las etapas de la sífilis es cinco veces mayor en el Condado de Shelby que en EE.UU. en general.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection that can cause serious illness and even death if left untreated. Testing those who are at risk is crucial because the early symptoms of syphilis can be hidden or easily mistaken for a harmless skin rash. Syphilis is especially harmful if transmitted by a mother to her fetus during pregnancy. That is why syphilis testing is recommended for all pregnant women.
In 2010, there were 634 reported syphilis cases in Shelby County (all stages). Shelby County accounted for almost 60% of all syphilis cases Tennessee during that year. The infection rate for all stages of syphilis is five times higher in Shelby County than in the U.S. overall.
Because syphilis infection often coincides with HIV infection, offering tests for both infections and prevention counseling to people at high risk makes it more likely that new infections will be discovered and treated before severe complications develop. An active syphilis infection can also make the infected person more vulnerable to HIV and more likely to transmit the HIV virus to others. Therefore, testing for and treating syphilis will also help to prevent HIV infection in our community.
The good news is that if caught early, syphilis infection can be completely cured with antibiotics, eliminating or minimizing the harmful effects of the disease. The first step to getting treatment is getting tested!
