Memphis Pastor Gifts Car to Popular “Gatorade Man” After Arrest
(LPL) – DeMarcus Dickerson—known as the “Gatorade Man” for selling beverages to drivers at a busy Memphis intersection—received a car as a gift from a local pastor, a gesture of community support following his recent arrest.
Bishop Gregory Stapleton, pastor and founder of Greater Impact Faith Church, presented the vehicle to Dickerson on Tuesday, October 13, aiming to make his work easier and help him grow his water and sports drink sales business.
Dickerson has been selling his products at the intersection of Poplar Avenue and East Parkway in Midtown Memphis for nearly six years. His activities drew public attention last week when he was arrested on a charge of obstructing traffic.
However, the charges were dismissed, and the vendor returned to his usual spot, where he received shows of support from customers and residents who rallied to help him.
The car is part of a broader initiative to provide him with stability and the tools needed to continue working. In addition to the vehicle, members of the Crazy Faith Community Development Corporation are helping him establish a limited liability company (LLC) to formalize his business operations.
“He won’t have to rely on donations for a while. He’ll be able to thrive and grow his business,” Stapleton said, according to WREG.
The pastor also noted that they plan to upgrade the vehicle to better meet Dickerson’s needs and serve as a blessing to him.
For his part, Dickerson expressed gratitude for the support and highlighted that the car would be a huge help, as he currently gets around on foot.
The initiative is also supported by the organization We Fight Monsters, which aims to connect him with guidance on financial literacy and entrepreneurship.
The community’s response has turned the situation into a display of solidarity with a worker known to many Memphis drivers, who are now seeking to help him strengthen his business and continue his work.
