Activistas de Memphis pide a negocios boicotear a agentes y frenar acciones antiinmigrantes

(LPL) – Un grupo de activistas está llamando a los negocios de Memphis a boicotear a los agentes que participan en operativos que consideran parte de una creciente ofensiva contra los inmigrantes en la ciudad.

Durante una conferencia de prensa este lunes, Free The 901 invitó a propietarios de restaurantes, bares, tiendas y otros establecimientos a sumarse a un movimiento de “boycott” dirigido contra los agentes del Memphis Safe Task Force y otras autoridades involucradas en acciones migratorias.

El llamado ocurre después del operativo de ICE realizado durante el fin de semana en el área de Berclair, que resultó en el arresto de más de 100 personas, según testigos, y que generó preocupación y protestas de organizaciones comunitarias. Los activistas sostienen que estas acciones están creando miedo entre las familias inmigrantes de Memphis y pidieron a los negocios tomar una posición pública.

La campaña busca que los establecimientos participantes se nieguen a ofrecer servicios o beneficios a los agentes relacionados con estas operaciones y, al mismo tiempo, que los consumidores apoyen a los negocios que se han pronunciado contra las acciones que el grupo califica como antiinmigrantes.

Los organizadores también pidieron que se detengan las acciones que, según ellos, están utilizando recursos públicos para perseguir o intimidar a comunidades inmigrantes. Su mensaje fue dirigido tanto a las autoridades como a los propietarios de negocios: no colaborar y no proporcionar apoyo económico a los agentes que participan en estas operaciones.

La convocatoria se produce en medio de un creciente debate en Memphis sobre el papel del Memphis Safe Task Force, creado para combatir el crimen y que cuenta con la participación de múltiples agencias policiales y estatales.

Por su parte, el Departamento de Policía de Memphis ha insistido en que no participó en la planificación ni ejecución del operativo de ICE realizado durante el fin de semana. MPD señaló que sus agentes acudieron únicamente para mantener la seguridad pública y controlar la situación en el lugar.

Los activistas, sin embargo, sostienen que la comunidad necesita acciones concretas para detener lo que consideran una política de intimidación contra los inmigrantes y están pidiendo a los negocios de Memphis que utilicen su poder económico para enviar ese mensaje.

La campaña busca seguir creciendo durante los próximos días con la incorporación de más establecimientos y consumidores.

(LPL) – A group of activists is calling on Memphis businesses to boycott agents participating in operations they view as part of a growing crackdown on immigrants in the city.

During a press conference on Monday, “Free The 901” invited owners of restaurants, bars, shops, and other establishments to join a boycott movement targeting agents from the Memphis Safe Task Force and other authorities involved in immigration enforcement actions.

The call follows an ICE operation conducted over the weekend in the Berclair area, which resulted in the arrest of more than 100 people—according to witnesses—and sparked concern and protests from community organizations. Activists maintain that these actions are instilling fear among immigrant families in Memphis and urged businesses to take a public stand.

The campaign seeks to have participating establishments refuse services or perks to agents linked to these operations while encouraging consumers to support businesses that have spoken out against actions the group characterizes as anti-immigrant.

According to Free The 901, dozens of businesses have already joined the initiative. These include restaurants, coffee shops, barbershops, beauty salons, florists, and other small businesses.

Organizers also called for a halt to actions that they claim use public resources to target or intimidate immigrant communities. Their message was directed at both authorities and business owners: do not collaborate with or provide financial support to agents participating in these operations.

The call to action comes amidst a growing debate in Memphis regarding the role of the Memphis Safe Task Force, which was created to combat crime and involves multiple law enforcement and state agencies.

For its part, the Memphis Police Department has insisted that it did not participate in the planning or execution of the ICE operation carried out over the weekend. The MPD stated that its officers were present solely to maintain public safety and manage the situation at the scene. Activists, however, maintain that the community needs concrete actions to halt what they view as a policy of intimidation against immigrants, and they are calling on Memphis businesses to use their economic power to send that message.

The campaign aims to continue growing over the coming days with the addition of more businesses and consumers.
