Alcalde del Condado de Shelby advierte a los conductores por posibles retener de la Guardia Nacional en la ciudad de Memphis

(LPL) – Aunque aún no está claro en qué capacidad participará la Guardia Nacional en Memphis, las autoridades del condado de Shelby advirtieron que los conductores podrían encontrarse con retenes en distintos puntos de la ciudad si se concreta su incorporación al plan federal “Memphis Safe Task Force”, que agrupa a 22 agencias.

En un mensaje en redes sociales, el Gobierno del Condado de Shelby señaló que los retenes en otras ciudades han causado preocupación y afectado la rutina diaria de los residentes. Por ello, publicaron recomendaciones para que la comunidad esté informada y preparada.

Entre los consejos destacan: mantener la calma, reducir la velocidad, portar licencia e información del seguro vigentes, mantener las manos visibles y seguir las instrucciones de las autoridades. También aconsejan evitar los retenes cuando sea posible.

El alcalde del condado, Lee Harris, explicó que decidió difundir estos consejos por dos motivos: considera que el despliegue de la Guardia Nacional representa una “ocupación militar” inaceptable en Memphis y porque aún existen demasiadas incógnitas sobre el plan. “No sabemos cuántos retenes habrá, si los soldados portarán armas cortas o semiautomáticas, si habrá tanques o vehículos blindados”, cuestionó.

El abogado y excomisionado del condado, Van Turner, calificó de sensatas las recomendaciones publicadas por el condado y señaló que son consejos que él mismo daría a sus clientes.

Harris insistió en que el gobernador Bill Lee debe aclarar los detalles del plan y confirmar si enviará a la Guardia Nacional a Memphis.

Shelby County Mayor warns drivers about possible National Guard checkpoints in Memphis

(LPL) – Although it is still unclear in what capacity the National Guard will participate in Memphis, Shelby County authorities have warned that drivers could encounter checkpoints throughout the city if their involvement in the federal “Memphis Safe Task Force” plan moves forward, which includes 22 agencies.

In a social media post, the Shelby County Government noted that checkpoints in other cities have caused concern and disrupted residents’ daily routines. For this reason, they published recommendations to keep the community informed and prepared.

Among the tips: stay calm, slow down, carry a valid license and insurance, keep your hands visible, and follow officers’ instructions. They also suggest avoiding checkpoints when possible.

Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris explained that he decided to share this advice for two reasons: he considers the deployment of the National Guard an unacceptable “military occupation” of Memphis, and there are still too many unanswered questions about the plan. “We don’t know how many checkpoints there will be, if soldiers will carry sidearms or semi-automatic weapons, if there will be tanks or armored vehicles,” he said.

Attorney and former county commissioner Van Turner called the county’s recommendations sound and said they are the same kind of advice he would give his clients.

Harris insisted that Governor Bill Lee must clarify the details of the plan and confirm whether he will send the National Guard to Memphis.
