Guatemalan Consul Visits Detainees Following Memphis Immigration Raid

(LPL) – Leslye Samanta Illescas, the Guatemalan Consul General in Nashville, conducted a consular visit to the West Tennessee Detention Facility in Mason, Tennessee. The visit aimed to assess firsthand the situation of Guatemalan citizens held in immigration custody following a raid on August 30 at a Memphis nightclub.

During her tour of the detention center, the official observed the conditions in which the Guatemalans are being held and checked on their health status. She also provided consular support to address their needs regarding legal assistance and communication with family members, while ensuring their fundamental rights were respected.

The visit took place just days after Operation «Corral Light,» carried out at the «El Corralón» establishment on Macon Road. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that 121 people were arrested during the operation, which involved ICE and other agencies.

According to documents related to the operation, the state investigation preceding the raid initially targeted the establishment and its owner in connection with a search warrant regarding alleged illegal gambling and narcotics activities. Subsequently, immigration agents detained individuals present at the location.

In its statement, the DHS noted that some of the detainees had criminal records involving offenses such as theft, drug possession, domestic violence, driving under the influence, assault, child endangerment, and prostitution. However, the federal statement did not specify the nationalities of the 121 arrested individuals or the breakdown by nationality. The agency publicly identified only a few individuals and provided information regarding their backgrounds.

The raid sparked concern and protests in Memphis and Mason. Activists and family members have demanded information about the detainees and called for better conditions within the detention center. On September 2, demonstrators gathered outside the Mason facility to show support for the detained immigrants and to denounce alleged poor conditions.
