El Aeropuerto Internacional de Memphis será renombrado en honor a Fred Smith, fundador de FedEx

(LPL/WREG) – La junta de la Autoridad Aeroportuaria del Condado de Memphis-Shelby aprobó el jueves por la mañana una medida para renombrar el aeropuerto de Memphis en honor al fundador de FedEx, Frederick W. Smith.

“Nos honra haber recibido este merecido reconocimiento. Cambiar el nombre de un aeropuerto implica muchos pasos regulatorios, logísticos y operativos, pero nuestro personal comenzará el proceso de inmediato”, declaró la junta del aeropuerto en un comunicado de prensa.

Smith falleció el sábado pasado a los 80 años. Fue el fundador del gigante mundial de envíos FedEx, cuyo centro de operaciones mundial se encuentra en el aeropuerto de Memphis. La compañía, con sede en el área metropolitana de Memphis, emplea a más de 30.000 personas. Smith nació en Marks, Misisipi, en 1944 y se graduó de Yale en 1966. Tras cuatro años de servicio en el Cuerpo de Marines de los Estados Unidos, Smith inauguró las operaciones de FedEx en 1973.

El alcalde de Memphis, Paul Young, declaró el miércoles en WREG su apoyo al cambio de nombre del aeropuerto. El exalcalde Jim Strickland lo ha calificado como “el mejor memphiano de todos los tiempos”.

Memphis International Airport will be renamed in honor of Fred Smith, founder of FedEx

(LPL/WREG) – The Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority board approved a measure Thursday morning to rename the Memphis airport in honor of FedEx founder Frederick W. Smith.

“We are honored to be tasked with this well-deserved recognition for him. There are many regulatory, logistical and operational steps involved in renaming an airport, but our staff will immediately begin the process,” the airport board said in a news release.

Smith died last Saturday at age 80. He was the founder of global shipping giant FedEx, whose world hub is based at the Memphis airport. The company, which is headquartered in the Memphis area, employs more than 30,000 here.
Smith was born in Marks, Mississippi, in 1944 and earned his degree from Yale in 1966. After four years of service in the United States Marine Corps, Smith launched FedEx operations in 1973.

Memphis Mayor Paul Young said Wednesday on WREG that he supported the airport renaming. Former Mayor Jim Strickland has called Smith “the greatest Memphian of all time.”
