Encuentran un cuerpo durante la búsqueda de Camila Mendoza, joven que desapareció en Texas en Nochebuena, dice el sheriff

(LPL/CNN) – Un cuerpo fue encontrado durante la búsqueda de Camila Mendoza Olmos, la joven que desapareció cerca de San Antonio el día antes de Navidad, dijo este martes por la tarde el sheriff del condado de Bexar, Javier Salazar.

Salazar indicó que es muy pronto para identificar si se trataba del cuerpo de la joven de 19 años, pero el área donde se encontraron los restos estaba cerca de la casa de Mendoza Olmos, según el sheriff.

Agregó que las autoridades no sospechan de algún crimen, pero el cuerpo presentaba “indicadores” de autolesión.

Las autoridades estaban al tanto y buscaban un arma de fuego perteneciente a uno de los familiares de Mendoza Olmos que estaba desaparecida, dijo Salazar. Un arma fue recuperada cerca del cuerpo este martes, pero la policía aún no la ha procesado, indicó el sheriff.

Docenas de voluntarios ayudaron en la búsqueda durante el fin de semana festivo, y la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Bexar había dicho que podría estar en peligro inminente.

Cuando se le preguntó anteriormente por qué su oficina creía que podría estar en peligro inminente, Salazar dijo a CNN el lunes: “hay información que no puedo divulgar… debido a la sensibilidad del tema”.

“Consideramos peligro inminente cualquier cosa desde autolesiones hasta que alguien realmente secuestre a Camila, y todas esas posibilidades existen actualmente”, afirmó Salazar el lunes, señalando que la joven desaparecida había hablado previamente de suicidio. “No podemos descartar nada en este momento de la investigación”.

Miembros de la comunidad se alinearon con mapas y un dron para intentar resolver la misteriosa desaparición.

“Pensé que la encontraría como otras veces, caminando, y volveríamos juntas a casa”, dijo Rosario Olmos en español a la filial de CNN KENS después de que su hija desapareciera el día anterior.

Mendoza Olmos fue vista por última vez en la cámara de vigilancia de un vecino justo antes de las 7 a.m. de la víspera de Navidad, afuera de su casa. Tras ser vista mirando dentro de su vehículo, la grabación termina, según la oficina del sheriff, y no hay señales claras de adónde fue.

“Como una cámara Ring se detiene cuando deja de detectar movimiento”, dijo Camila Estrella, una de las mejores amigas de Mendoza Olmos, a WOAI, afiliada de CNN. “Eso es todo lo que vimos de ella, simplemente abriendo la puerta trasera de su auto… No tenemos nada con qué rastrearla”.

Según la Policía, Mendoza Olmos vestía una sudadera azul claro con negro, pantalones de pijama azul claro y zapatos blancos.

Familiares e investigadores dicen que no están seguros de por qué estaba mirando dentro del automóvil. Como el vehículo quedó en el lugar, creen que salió del vecindario a pie.

La oficina del sheriff difundió el lunes un segundo video que, según los investigadores, muestra el último avistamiento confirmado de la adolescente. Las imágenes de una cámara de tablero compartidas por un conductor que iba a trabajar alrededor de las 7:00 a.m. de Nochebuena muestran a una peatona que se cree es Mendoza Olmos caminando hacia el norte por Wildhorse Parkway, entre Shetland Wind y Caspian Spring.

La policía instó a los residentes a compartir cualquier video disponible que pudiera ayudar en la búsqueda.

Las pistas que siguen los investigadores son confusas. Mendoza Olmos aparentemente llevaba consigo las llaves del carro cuando desapareció, aunque no se llevó el vehículo.

“Una de las cosas muy extrañas en este caso es que la joven dejó su teléfono celular”, dijo Salazar a CNN.

Según la Policía, también dejó un iPad.

Body found during search for Camila Mendoza, young woman who disappeared in Texas on Christmas Eve, sheriff says

(LPL/CNN) – A body was found during the search for Camila Mendoza Olmos, the young woman who disappeared near San Antonio the day before Christmas, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said Tuesday afternoon.

Salazar said it was too early to identify whether it was the body of the 19-year-old, but the area where the remains were found was near Mendoza Olmos’ home, according to the sheriff.

He added that authorities do not suspect foul play, but the body showed “indicators” of self-harm.

Authorities were aware of and searching for a firearm belonging to one of Mendoza Olmos’ family members that was missing, Salazar said. A weapon was recovered near the body Tuesday, but police have not yet processed it, the sheriff said.

Dozens of volunteers assisted in the search over the holiday weekend, and the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office had said she might be in imminent danger.

When asked earlier why his office believed she might be in imminent danger, Salazar told CNN on Monday: “There is information that I cannot disclose… due to the sensitivity of the issue.”

“We consider imminent danger anything from self-harm to someone actually kidnapping Camila, and all of those possibilities currently exist,” Salazar said Monday, noting that the missing young woman had previously spoken of suicide. “We can’t rule anything out at this point in the investigation.”

Community members lined up with maps and a drone to try to solve the mysterious disappearance.

“I thought I would find her like other times, walking, and we would go home together,” Rosario Olmos told CNN affiliate KENS in Spanish after her daughter disappeared the day before.

“I miss her. Dad is waiting for her at home,” her father, Alfonso Mendoza, told CNN affiliate KSAT.
Mendoza Olmos was last seen on a neighbor’s surveillance camera just before 7 a.m. on Christmas Eve, outside her home. After she was seen looking inside her vehicle, the recording ends, according to the sheriff’s office, and there are no clear indications of where she went.

“A Ring camera stops recording when it stops detecting motion,” Camila Estrella, one of Mendoza Olmos’s best friends, told CNN affiliate WOAI. “That’s all we saw of her, just opening the back door of her car… We have nothing to track her with.”

According to police, Mendoza Olmos was wearing a light blue and black sweatshirt, light blue pajama pants, and white shoes.

Family members and investigators say they are unsure why she was looking inside the car. Since the vehicle remained at the location, they believe she left the neighborhood on foot.

The sheriff’s office released a second video on Monday that investigators say shows the last confirmed sighting of the teenager. Dashcam footage shared by a driver on his way to work around 7:00 a.m. on Christmas Eve shows a pedestrian believed to be Mendoza Olmos walking north on Wildhorse Parkway, between Shetland Wind and Caspian Spring.

Police urged residents to share any available video that could assist in the search.

The leads investigators are following are confusing. Mendoza Olmos apparently had her car keys with her when she disappeared, although she did not take the vehicle.

“One of the very strange things in this case is that the young woman left her cell phone behind,” Salazar told CNN.

According to police, she also left behind an iPad.
