(LPL) – Fred Smith, founder of FedEx and one of the world’s most influential business leaders, passed away Saturday afternoon, his family confirmed. Born in Marks, Mississippi, Smith had deep roots in the American South and spent much of his life as a proud resident of Memphis.

He founded Federal Express in 1971 after serving as a U.S. Marine Corps officer in the Vietnam War. His military experience shaped his leadership style—clear, decisive, and focused on execution. Under his guidance, FedEx became one of the world’s leading logistics companies, headquartered in Memphis and employing people in dozens of countries.

Although he stepped down as CEO in 2022, Smith remained executive chairman of the board, continuing to shape the company’s strategic vision with an emphasis on sustainability and innovation. Beyond his business career, Smith was a committed philanthropist who supported education, community initiatives, and veterans’ organizations.
