Hispanic man receives life sentence for murdering someone over a stolen cell phone in Knoxville, TN
(LPL) – A 22-year-old Hispanic man has been sentenced to life in prison in Tennessee after being found guilty of first-degree murder for killing a man during a dispute over the alleged theft of a cell phone, the Knox County District Attorney’s Office reported.
Kevin Jaimes Martinez was sentenced by Judge Scott Green after a jury returned a guilty verdict at the conclusion of a three-day trial, District Attorney General Charme Allen announced on October 22.
The case dates back to December 19, 2024, when the Knoxville Police Department responded to a report of gunfire on Washington Pike. The victim, identified as 38-year-old Ernest Glenn, was shot while inside a car parked in front of a laundromat.
According to evidence presented during the trial, Martinez was upset because he believed Glenn had stolen his brother’s cell phone.
Surveillance camera footage showed the defendant walking from behind the laundromat toward the victim’s vehicle. After briefly returning behind the building, he went back to the car, opened the door, and shot Glenn.
Following the attack, Martinez fled the scene. Authorities eventually arrested him at the Greyhound bus station in Nashville as he was heading to California.
The investigation involved the Knoxville Police Department, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), and the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.
He must serve 51 years before becoming eligible for parole
According to the Knox County District Attorney’s Office, the life sentence imposed under Tennessee law means that Martinez must serve 51 years in prison before he is eligible to appear before the parole board. Prosecutor Charme Allen highlighted the work of the law enforcement agencies that participated in the investigation, which led to the location and arrest of the defendant.
The verdict concludes the legal proceedings regarding a homicide that, according to prosecutors, stemmed from a dispute over a cell phone.
