Incidente en el zoológico de Memphis: chimpancé impacta y daña un vidrio ante la isa de varios presentes

(LP) – Un video que circula en redes sociales ha generado preocupación luego de mostrar el momento en que un chimpancé corre violentamente hacia el vidrio de su exhibición en el Memphis Zoo y, tras el impacto, rompe un panel interior mientras un grupo de jóvenes ríe y graba la escena.

Las imágenes muestran al animal embistiendo el cristal dentro del hábitat de bonobos. El golpe provoca daños visibles en una de las capas internas del vidrio, mientras las personas detrás de la cámara reaccionan entre risas.

Tras el incidente, el Zoológico de Memphis emitió un comunicado confirmando que el hecho ocurrió en el hábitat de bonobos y que el daño afectó únicamente un panel interior del vidrio.

La institución explicó que la exhibición está construida con múltiples capas de cristal de seguridad reforzado que cumplen con estrictos estándares, y que las capas adicionales permanecieron intactas en todo momento.

No hubo una brecha en el recinto, el animal no resultó herido y ningún visitante sufrió lesiones.
Por precaución, el área fue cerrada temporalmente mientras se reemplaza el panel dañado.

Debido a que el vidrio es fabricado a medida, las reparaciones podrían extenderse por un periodo considerable. Durante ese tiempo, los bonobos tendrán acceso limitado a ciertas áreas de su hábitat exterior, lo que impacta su rutina diaria y el uso completo de su espacio.

El zoológico subrayó que el comportamiento disruptivo en las exhibiciones no solo causa daños materiales, sino que puede afectar el bienestar de los animales.

La institución pidió a los visitantes no golpear el vidrio, gritar, provocar a los animales ni aglomerarse en las barreras, ya que estas acciones pueden generar estrés.

Finalmente, el zoológico reiteró que la seguridad y el bienestar de los animales, los visitantes y el personal siguen siendo su máxima prioridad, y recordó que el respeto hacia los animales es fundamental para su misión.

The footage shows the animal ramming into the glass inside the bonobo habitat. The impact caused visible damage to one of the inner layers of the glass, while those behind the camera reacted with laughter.

Following the incident, the Memphis Zoo issued a statement confirming that the event occurred in the bonobo habitat and that the damage affected only one interior glass panel.

The institution explained that the exhibit is constructed with multiple layers of reinforced safety glass that meet strict standards, and that the additional layers remained intact at all times.

There was no breach in the enclosure, the animal was not injured, and no visitors suffered any injuries. As a precaution, the area was temporarily closed while the damaged panel was replaced.

Because the glass is custom-made, the repairs could take a considerable amount of time. During this time, the bonobos will have limited access to certain areas of their outdoor habitat, impacting their daily routine and full use of their space.

The zoo emphasized that disruptive behavior in the exhibits not only causes material damage but can also affect the animals’ well-being.

The institution asked visitors not to bang on the glass, shout, provoke the animals, or crowd against the barriers, as these actions can cause stress.
