Inicia operativo en Colilerville para sancionar uso de celulares al volante

(LPL) – Autoridades estatales y locales dieron inicio en Collierville a la campaña “Operación Manos Libres”, en el marco del Mes de Concientización sobre la Conducción Distraída que se conmemora en abril, con el objetivo de reforzar el cumplimiento de la ley y reducir accidentes en las carreteras.

El anuncio se realizó en la histórica plaza del municipio y fue encabezado por el director de la Tennessee Highway Safety Office, Buddy Lewis, quien destacó la importancia de la Ley “Hands-Free” en Tennessee, la cual prohíbe el uso manual de teléfonos celulares mientras se conduce. La normativa busca disminuir las distracciones al volante, una de las principales causas de accidentes de tránsito en el estado.

El evento reunió a diversas agencias del orden público, incluyendo representantes de la la Patrulla de Carreteras de Tennessee y departamentos policiales del área, entre ellos el jefe de policía de Collierville, Dale Lane.

Durante la presentación, Lane enfatizó que la conducción distraída sigue poniendo vidas en riesgo diariamente. Señaló que acciones como enviar mensajes de texto, contestar llamadas o manipular dispositivos móviles pueden esperar, ya que la prioridad es garantizar la seguridad de todos en las vías.

Como parte de la campaña, las autoridades anunciaron un aumento en la vigilancia y en la aplicación de la ley. A partir de ahora, los conductores que sean sorprendidos utilizando dispositivos móviles mientras manejan podrán enfrentar multas y la acumulación de puntos en su licencia.

La iniciativa también busca educar a la comunidad sobre los peligros de la distracción al volante. Según datos oficiales de Hands Free Tennessee, apartar la vista del camino por solo cinco segundos a velocidad de autopista equivale a recorrer la longitud de un campo de fútbol con los ojos cerrados.

Las autoridades reiteraron el llamado a los conductores a mantenerse enfocados, dejar el teléfono y contribuir a la seguridad vial en todo el estado.

The announcement took place at the town’s historic square and was led by Buddy Lewis, Director of the Tennessee Highway Safety Office, who highlighted the importance of Tennessee’s “Hands-Free” Law, which prohibits the manual use of cell phones while driving. The regulation seeks to minimize distractions behind the wheel—one of the leading causes of traffic accidents in the state.

The event brought together various law enforcement agencies, including representatives from the Tennessee Highway Patrol and area police departments, among them Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane.

During the presentation, Lane emphasized that distracted driving continues to put lives at risk on a daily basis. He noted that actions such as texting, answering calls, or handling mobile devices can wait, as the priority is ensuring the safety of everyone on the roads.

As part of the campaign, authorities announced increased surveillance and enforcement efforts. Effective immediately, drivers caught using mobile devices while operating a vehicle may face fines and points added to their driving records.

The initiative also aims to educate the community about the dangers of distracted driving. According to official data from Hands Free Tennessee, taking one’s eyes off the road for just five seconds at highway speeds is equivalent to traveling the length of a football field with one’s eyes closed.

Authorities reiterated their appeal to drivers to stay focused, put down their phones, and contribute to road safety throughout the state.
