(LPL/FOX13) – Officers shot and killed a man armed with a knife during a shoplifting call outside the Lowe’s across from the Wolfchase Galleria on Thursday night in Bartlett, authorities reported.

The man who died was identified as 30-year-old Thomas Feminella.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) reported that it began shortly before 6 p.m., when Bartlett Police Department (BPD) officers responded to a shoplifting report at a business located on Highway 64, near Interstate 40.

While on scene, BPD officers saw a second shoplifting suspect leaving the store. When they attempted to detain him, the suspect pulled a knife on officers. He walked toward them and refused to drop the weapon, the TBI reported.

“For reasons still under investigation, the situation escalated, resulting in two officers firing their weapons, striking the subject, who was standing near an adjacent business,” TBI said in a statement.
TBI said the man was taken to a hospital, where he died.

FOX13 obtained video from a bystander showing the moments before the shooting in front of the Lowe’s store. The footage shows two officers confronting a man, with one of them holding his gun.

TBI is the lead agency in the police investigation.
