Recluso de Tennessee suplica por pruebas de ADN ante la inminente ejecución

(LPL/WREG) – Tony Carruthers, un recluso de Tennessee, tiene programada su ejecución para este jueves, a menos que el gobernador de Tennessee, Bill Lee, decida detenerla.

Carruthers ha pasado más de 30 años en el corredor de la muerte tras ser declarado culpable en un caso de secuestro y asesinato ocurrido en Memphis en 1994.
Carruthers y su presunto cómplice, “James Montgomery”, fueron condenados en 1996 por secuestrar, torturar y enterrar vivos a una madre, a su hijo y a un amigo de este.

Una de las víctimas tenía apenas 17 años de edad.

Ambos hombres fueron declarados culpables y sentenciados a muerte; sin embargo, Montgomery logró quedar en libertad en 2015, cuando un tribunal de apelaciones dictaminó que se le debería haber concedido un juicio separado del de Carruthers.
Durante más de 30 años, Carruthers ha sostenido su inocencia y ahora solicita al gobernador Bill Lee más tiempo para realizar pruebas de ADN que podrían, potencialmente, limpiar su nombre.
El padre de una de las víctimas no está de acuerdo.

“Los detectives fueron al lugar y desenterraron los cuerpos. Los encontraron. Los arrestaron. Tuvimos el juicio. ¡Es él! No hace falta ningún ADN”, afirmó.
Mientras tanto, se espera que líderes religiosos y comunitarios se congreguen este lunes en el Capitolio estatal para instar al gobernador Bill Lee a detener la ejecución de Carruthers.

Los organizadores han anunciado que tienen previsto entregar una petición con más de 50.000 firmas.

Tennessee inmate pleads for DNA testing as execution nears

(LPL/WREG) – Tony Carruthers, a Tennessee inmate, is scheduled to be executed on Thursday unless Tennessee Governor Bill Lee chooses to halt it.

Carruthers has spent more than 30 years on death row after being convicted in a 1994 Memphis kidnapping and murder case.
Carruthers and his alleged accomplice, “James Montgomery,” were convicted of kidnapping, torturing, and burying alive a mother, her son, and his friend back in 1996.

One of the victims was as young as 17 years old.

Both men were convicted and sentenced to death, but Montgomery was able to walk free in 2015 when an appeals court ruled he should have been given a separate trial from Carruthers.
For more than 30 years, Carruthers has maintained his innocence, and now he’s asking Governor Bill Lee for more time to do DNA testing that could potentially clear his name.
One of the victim’s fathers doesn’t agree.

“Detectives went out there and dug it up. They got them. Arrested them. We had the trial. It’s him! Don’t need no DNA,” he said.
Meanwhile, faith and community leaders are expected to gather at the state capitol on Monday, urging Governor Bill Lee to stop Carruthers’ execution.

Organizers say they plan to deliver a petition with more than 50,000 signatures.
