Tom Homan, director de ICE: “Necesitamos aumentar los arrestos, no estoy satisfecho con las cifras”

(LPL) – El ambiente de temor entre las comunidades inmigrantes sigue en ascenso luego de que el director interino del Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE), Tom Homan, hiciera duras declaraciones y confirmara un aumento en las operaciones de arresto en todo el país.

“No hay santuario para inmigrantes ilegales en este país. Puedes llamarlo una ‘jurisdicción santuario’ si quieres. Es una tontería, y todos lo sabemos”, dijo Homan el jueves, dejando en claro que ICE no reconoce límites cuando se trata de ejecutar órdenes de arresto.

Sus palabras llegan justo después de que más de 100 inmigrantes fueran detenidos en una operación de ICE en Tallahassee, Florida, una acción que ha generado alarma entre familias y defensores de derechos humanos, especialmente en ciudades como Memphis, donde miles de inmigrantes viven y trabajan con temor constante a ser separados de sus seres queridos.

Homan aseguró que las detenciones aumentarán: “No estoy satisfecho con los números, así que necesitamos incrementarlos. Hay alrededor de 600,000 inmigrantes indocumentados con condenas criminales o cargos pendientes caminando por las calles. Así que sí, tenemos que hacer más”.

Homan también dijo que la prioridad eran los inmigrantes que cometen delitos, pero que otras personas que viven en el país sin la documentación adecuada también serán detenidas.

“Se están arrestando a más personas no delincuentes porque los agentes de ICE no van a dejar ir a un inmigrante ilegal. Nos obligan a buscar a un malhechor; muchas veces estás con otras personas en un lugar de trabajo. Busquen al malhechor; hay 10 inmigrantes ilegales más allí. Ellos también vienen”, expresó Homan.

Activistas locales en Memphis han reportado un incremento en llamadas de personas asustadas, muchas de las cuales evitan salir de sus casas o llevar a sus hijos a la escuela. Aunque Memphis ha expresado en el pasado su deseo de proteger a las comunidades inmigrantes, la reciente postura de ICE y los operativos en estados vecinos han dejado claro que ningún lugar está exento de ser blanco de redadas.

El abogado de inmigración Andrew Rankin confirmó recientemente que se han reportado arrestos fuera del edificio de la corte de inmigración, una práctica que ha sido duramente criticada por defensores de derechos civiles.

“Cuando las personas son detenidas simplemente por presentarse a sus audiencias, se rompe la confianza en el sistema. No se sienten seguras en ningún lado”, comentó Rankin.

(LPL) – The climate of fear among immigrant communities continues to rise after the acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Tom Homan, made harsh statements and confirmed an increase in arrest operations across the country.

“There is no sanctuary for illegal immigrants in this country. You can call it a ‘sanctuary jurisdiction’ if you want. It’s nonsense, and we all know it,” Homan said Thursday, making it clear that ICE recognizes no limits when it comes to executing arrest warrants.

His words come just after more than 100 immigrants were detained in an ICE operation in Tallahassee, Florida, an action that has raised alarm among families and human rights advocates, especially in cities like Memphis, where thousands of immigrants live and work in constant fear of being separated from their loved ones.

Homan asserted that arrests will increase: “I’m not satisfied with the numbers, so we need to increase them. There are around 600,000 undocumented immigrants with criminal convictions or pending charges walking the streets. So yes, we need to do more.”

Homan also said the priority is immigrants who commit crimes, but other people living in the country without proper documentation will get swept up as well.

“More non-criminal targets are being arrested because ICE agents are not going to walk away from an illegal alien. You force us to go find a bad guy; many times you’re with others at a work site. Go look for the bad guy; there are 10 more illegal aliens there. They’re coming too.”

Local activists in Memphis have reported an increase in calls from scared people, many of whom are avoiding leaving their homes or taking their children to school. Although Memphis has expressed its desire to protect immigrant communities in the past, ICE’s recent stance and operations in neighboring states have made it clear that no place is immune to raids.

Immigration attorney Andrew Rankin recently confirmed that arrests have been reported outside the immigration court building, a practice that has been harshly criticized by civil rights advocates.

“When people are detained simply for showing up for their hearings, it breaks their trust in the system. They don’t feel safe anywhere,” Rankin commented.
