Dimite el director del Centro Nacional de Contraterrorismo de EE UU: “No puedo apoyar la guerra en Irán”

(LPL/AFP) – El director del Centro Nacional de Contraterrorismo estadounidense dimitió el martes en protesta por la guerra contra Irán, iniciada a su juicio por la “presión” de Israel y una “campaña de desinformación”.
Joseph Kent, exmiembro de las fuerzas especiales, es el primer alto funcionario del gobierno de Trump que renuncia por su desacuerdo con la guerra.
“No puedo, en conciencia, apoyar la guerra en curso en Irán”, afirmó el alto funcionario en su carta de renuncia dirigida al presidente Donald Trump que compartió en la red X.

“Irán no representaba una amenaza inminente contra nuestra nación, y está claro que iniciamos esta guerra a causa de la presión de Israel y su poderoso lobby estadounidense”, añadió la misiva.

“En su primer gobierno, usted entendió mejor que cualquier otro presidente reciente como aplicar poder militar sin arrastrarnos a guerras inacabables”, sostuvo Kent.
“Hasta junio de 2025, usted entendió que las guerras en Oriente Medio eran una trampa que robó a Estados Unidos las preciadas vidas de nuestros patriotas”, añade.

En junio de 2025 Trump ordenó el bombardeo de instalaciones nucleares iraníes, una operación que contó con la colaboración de Israel y que provocó una escalada militar con Irán que duró doce días.

Trump aseguró en esa ocasión que las capacidades nucleares iraníes habían sido “aniquiladas”, e invitó al régimen de Teherán a negociar, lo que no desembocó en una solución pacífica.

El mandatario republicano ordenó una nueva oleada de ataques, de nuevo en coordinación con el gobierno de Benjamin Netanyahu, el 28 de febrero. La actual campaña ha provocado ataques iraníes contra buena parte de los vecinos en la región, y el bloqueo casi total del estratégico estrecho de Ormuz.

Internamente, la guerra con Irán ha provocado un cisma en el movimiento estadounidense MAGA (Make America Great Again) que llevó a Trump de nuevo al poder en las elecciones de 2024.
Algunos políticos y comentaristas conservadores consideran que Trump ha violado sus promesas de no abrir nuevos frentes bélicos.

“Al inicio de esta administración, altos responsables israelíes y miembros influyentes de medios de comunicación estadounidenses desplegaron una campaña de desinformación” para hacer creer que “Irán era una amenaza inminente”, explica el alto funcionario.
“Eso era una mentira y es la misma táctica que los israelíes utilizaron para arrastrarnos a la desastrosa guerra contra Irak”, añade.

“No podemos repetir el mismo error”, explica Kent, que pide a Trump que “reflexione sobre lo que estamos haciendo en Irán”.

Director of U.S. National Counterterrorism Center Resigns: “I Cannot Support the War in Iran”

(LPL/AFP) – The director of the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center resigned on Tuesday in protest against the war with Iran—a conflict he believes was instigated by pressure from Israel and a “disinformation campaign.”
Joseph Kent, a former Special Forces member, is the first high-ranking official in the Trump administration to step down due to a disagreement over the war.
“I cannot, in good conscience, support the ongoing war in Iran,” the senior official stated in his resignation letter addressed to President Donald Trump, which he shared on the social network X.

“Iran did not pose an imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we initiated this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful U.S. lobby,” the letter added.

“During your first term, you understood better than any other recent president how to apply military power without dragging us into endless wars,” Kent asserted.
“Up until June 2025, you understood that wars in the Middle East were a trap that robbed the United States of the precious lives of our patriots,” he added.

In June 2025, Trump ordered the bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities—an operation carried out in collaboration with Israel that triggered a twelve-day military escalation with Iran.

On that occasion, Trump claimed that Iran’s nuclear capabilities had been “annihilated” and invited the regime in Tehran to negotiate; however, this did not lead to a peaceful resolution.

On February 28, the Republican president ordered a new wave of attacks, once again in coordination with the government of Benjamin Netanyahu. The current campaign has provoked Iranian attacks against many of its regional neighbors, as well as a near-total blockade of the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Internally, the war with Iran has sparked a schism within the American MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement—the movement that swept Trump back into power in the 2024 elections.
Some conservative politicians and commentators believe that Trump has reneged on his promises not to open new fronts of war.

“At the beginning of this administration, senior Israeli officials and influential members of the American media launched a disinformation campaign” to foster the belief that “Iran posed an imminent threat,” explains the senior official.
“That was a lie, and it is the same tactic the Israelis used to drag us into the disastrous war against Iraq,” he adds.

“We cannot repeat the same mistake,” explains Kent, who urges Trump to “reflect on what we are doing in Iran.”
