Pope Leo XIV Diagnosed with Lung Cancer After Surgery

(LPL) – Pope Leo XIV was diagnosed with pulmonary adenocarcinoma—a type of lung cancer—after undergoing surgery to remove a lesion on his right lung, the Vatican announced on Tuesday, October 13.

The procedure confirmed the diagnosis doctors had suspected prior to the operation. To remove the lesion, surgeons excised the lower lobe of the right lung using a video-assisted technique.

The surgery lasted approximately 90 minutes and concluded successfully without complications, according to the medical report released by the Vatican. The 71-year-old pontiff regained consciousness normally and returned to his room at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

Papal audiences have been cancelled until October 20 while he continues his recovery. At this time, it has not been confirmed whether the procedure will affect his scheduled trip to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru, set for November 6–17.

The diagnosis presents a new health challenge for the leader of the Catholic Church, although the Vatican has not provided further details regarding potential treatment or his medical prognosis.

The story is developing as further official updates on his health status are awaited.
