Alcalde de Oakland es arrestado por presunto plan para robar carteles de campaña

(LPL) – El alcalde de Oakland, George Adrian Wiggins, fue arrestado el lunes y enfrenta cargos criminales por presuntamente participar en un plan para retirar y robar carteles de campaña de sus rivales políticos.

Wiggins fue acusado de conspiración criminal para cometer robo de propiedad, junto con su hijo, Thomas Wiggins, y una mujer identificada como Isabella Marino.

La investigación comenzó el 6 de agosto, cuando la policía recibió un reporte sobre el robo de varios carteles que decían “No Wiggins” colocados cerca de West Junior High. Seis días después, las autoridades recibieron una memoria USB con imágenes de vigilancia que mostraban a dos vehículos llegando al lugar. En el video, varias personas aparecían cortando los carteles y colocándolos en uno de los vehículos.

Uno de los vehículos fue posteriormente localizado en un restaurante McDonald’s y detenido por tener vidrios con un nivel de tintado superior al permitido por la ley.

Durante la investigación, una mujer que viajaba en el vehículo dijo a los agentes que el alcalde Wiggins le había ofrecido pagarle por retirar los carteles. Según su declaración, Wiggins posteriormente acudió a su lugar de trabajo, Sonic, para entregarle el dinero.

La mujer también afirmó que el alcalde le pidió que mintiera sobre lo ocurrido si las autoridades la interrogaban y le aseguró que tenía “un buen abogado” en caso de que enfrentaran problemas legales.

La investigación continúa y los acusados deberán enfrentar el proceso judicial correspondiente. Wiggins aparece como alcalde de Oakland en el sitio oficial de la ciudad.

Oakland Mayor Arrested Over Alleged Plot to Steal Campaign Signs

(LPL) – Oakland Mayor George Adrian Wiggins was arrested on Monday and faces criminal charges for allegedly participating in a scheme to remove and steal campaign signs belonging to his political rivals.

Wiggins was charged with criminal conspiracy to commit theft of property, alongside his son, Thomas Wiggins, and a woman identified as Isabella Marino.

The investigation began on August 6, when police received a report regarding the theft of several signs reading “No Wiggins” that had been placed near West Junior High. Six days later, authorities received a USB drive containing surveillance footage showing two vehicles arriving at the scene. The video showed several individuals cutting down the signs and loading them into one of the vehicles.

One of the vehicles was later located at a McDonald’s restaurant and stopped because its windows were tinted beyond the legal limit.

During the investigation, a woman who had been in the vehicle told officers that Mayor Wiggins had offered to pay her to remove the signs. According to her statement, Wiggins later visited her workplace—a Sonic restaurant—to hand over the money.

The woman also claimed that the mayor asked her to lie about the incident if questioned by authorities and assured her that he had “a good lawyer” in case they faced legal trouble.

The investigation is ongoing, and the accused will face the corresponding legal proceedings. Wiggins is listed as the mayor of Oakland on the city’s official website.
