Aspirantes a alcalde de Nueva York proponen más protección legal a migrantes

(LPL/EN) – Los principales aspirantes a la Alcaldía de Nueva York, el demócrata Zohran Mamdani y el independiente Andrew Cuomo, propusieron este jueves más protección legal para los migrantes en medio de la campaña de deportaciones del gobierno de Donald Trump.

En el primer debate político de candidatos previo a las elecciones del 4 de noviembre, Mamdani y Cuomo, que se repartirán el voto demócrata, abogaron por medidas similares, mientras que el tercer aspirante, el republicano Curtis Sliwa, simpatizó solo con los inmigrantes que son “trabajadores esenciales”.
La mayor parte del debate de dos horas se centró especialmente en el tema del alto costo de vida, pero hubo una pregunta sobre las frecuentes detenciones de inmigrantes por el Servicio de Inmigración y Aduanas (ICE), muchos de ellos solicitantes de asilo, cuando asisten a citas rutinarias en esta “ciudad santuario”.

Mamdani, que se reivindicó como “el primer alcalde inmigrante”, ya que es ugandés pero naturalizado estadounidense, criticó las detenciones de ICE en unas instalaciones, las del 26 Federal Plaza, en las que han protestado legisladores y políticos, y a las que un juez ha impuesto cumplir derechos básicos.

New York Mayoral Candidates Propose Greater Legal Protection for Migrants

(LPL/EN) – The leading candidates for mayor of New York, Democrat Zohran Mamdani and independent Andrew Cuomo, proposed greater legal protection for migrants this Thursday amid the Trump administration’s deportation campaign.

In the candidates’ first political debate ahead of the November 4 elections, Mamdani and Cuomo, who will split the Democratic vote, advocated for similar measures, while the third candidate, Republican Curtis Sliwa, sympathized only with immigrants who are “essential workers.”
Most of the two-hour debate focused specifically on the high cost of living, but there was a question about the frequent detentions of immigrants by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), many of them asylum seekers, while attending routine appointments in this “sanctuary city.”

Mamdani, who called himself “the first immigrant mayor” because he is Ugandan but a naturalized U.S. citizen, criticized the ICE detentions at the facility, 26 Federal Plaza, where lawmakers and politicians have protested and where a judge has ordered them to observe basic rights.
