Captan a oficial atropellando gansos en autopista; autoridades defienden la acción

(LPL) – Un video que inicialmente mostraba a una familia de gansos cruzando tranquilamente una autopista en Arkansas terminó generando indignación en redes sociales, luego de que una patrulla estatal atropellara y matara a dos crías mientras intentaba sacar a las aves de la carretera.

Las imágenes, obtenidas por el medio KATV, muestran a varios gansos cruzando la U.S. Highway 57, entre las ciudades de Cabot y Jacksonville. En el video se observa a un trooper de la Policía Estatal de Arkansas estacionado en el hombro izquierdo de la vía mientras las aves avanzaban lentamente hacia el otro lado.

Cuando los gansos ya casi habían terminado de cruzar, la patrulla activó las sirenas y aceleró en dirección al grupo. Segundos después, una de las crías fue atropellada. Un testigo aseguró que, tras finalizar el video, el oficial dio reversa y atropelló a una segunda cría antes de abandonar el lugar.

El incidente provocó una ola de críticas en redes sociales y cuestionamientos sobre la manera en que el oficial manejó la situación.

Horas más tarde, el director de la Policía Estatal de Arkansas, Mike Hagar, publicó un mensaje en Facebook defendiendo la acción del trooper y señalando que detener o reducir inesperadamente la velocidad en una autopista puede tener consecuencias fatales.

Hagar recordó un accidente ocurrido en 2017 sobre la Interestatal 40 en Mayflower, Arkansas, donde tres generaciones de una misma familia —una abuela, una madre y una bebé— murieron luego de que un vehículo impactara por detrás a otro automóvil que había disminuido la velocidad en la autopista.

Según el director, esa tragedia dejó una profunda marca entre los socorristas y oficiales que respondieron a la escena. Hagar afirmó que, aunque las imágenes del ganso son difíciles de ver, la prioridad de los agentes es evitar accidentes mayores y proteger vidas humanas en carreteras de alta velocidad.

Hasta el momento, la Policía Estatal de Arkansas no ha informado si el incidente será investigado internamente.

Officer Caught on Video Striking Geese on Highway; Authorities Defend the Action

(LPL) – A video—which initially showed a family of geese calmly crossing a highway in Arkansas—sparked outrage on social media after a state trooper’s patrol car struck and killed two goslings while attempting to clear the birds from the roadway.

The footage, obtained by local station KATV, shows several geese crossing U.S. Highway 57, located between the cities of Cabot and Jacksonville. The video captures an Arkansas State Police trooper parked on the left shoulder of the road as the birds slowly made their way to the other side.

Just as the geese were nearly finished crossing, the patrol car activated its sirens and accelerated toward the group. Seconds later, one of the goslings was struck. A witness claimed that, after the video ended, the officer reversed his vehicle and struck a second gosling before leaving the scene.

The incident triggered a wave of criticism on social media and raised questions regarding the manner in which the officer handled the situation.

Hours later, Arkansas State Police Director Mike Hagar posted a message on Facebook defending the trooper’s actions, noting that stopping or unexpectedly slowing down on a highway can have fatal consequences.

Hagar cited a 2017 accident on Interstate 40 in Mayflower, Arkansas, in which three generations of the same family—a grandmother, a mother, and an infant—died after a vehicle rear-ended another car that had slowed down on the highway.

According to the director, that tragedy left a deep impression on the first responders and officers who answered the call. Hagar stated that, while the footage involving the geese is difficult to watch, the officers’ priority is to prevent major accidents and protect human lives on high-speed roadways.

As of now, the Arkansas State Police have not indicated whether the incident will be subject to an internal investigation.
