Bail Set at $1.2 Million for “Chud the Builder,” Streamer Known for Racist Content, Arrested After Shooting

(LPL/CNN) – A streamer known for posting videos containing racist content online appeared in court this Friday morning, where he faces charges—including attempted murder—following a shooting that took place outside a courthouse in Tennessee.

Dalton Eatherly, who goes by the name “Chud the Builder” on the internet, was arrested after an altercation with another man—whose identity has not been disclosed by authorities—escalated into a shooting in front of the Montgomery County Courthouse in Clarksville on Wednesday, according to the Tennessee District Attorney General’s Office.

Eatherly, 28, faces additional charges including the use of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office noted.

During his arraignment and bail hearing, General Sessions Court Judge Reid Poland III set bail at $1.25 million, “based on the fact of the number of people who were in the courthouse courtyard and the severity of all these offenses.”

Eatherly, who was wearing the standard Montgomery County jail uniform, was seen briefly closing his eyes when the judge announced the bail amount.
Criminal attempted murder carries a potential penalty of 15 to 60 years in a Tennessee state penitentiary, the judge stated.

A preliminary hearing for Eatherly has been scheduled for May 26.

Attorney Jake Fendley was appointed to represent Eatherly at the hearing. Court records indicate that he had previously represented Eatherly in the past. CNN has requested comment regarding this matter. Eatherly’s social media history reveals a pattern of posting videos in which he uses racial slurs against Black people and other minorities, and at least one instance in which he used physical force against a Black person. The streamer often refers to Black people as “chimpanzees” in his online videos.

Following Wednesday’s incident, Eatherly live-streamed the moment he was speaking with emergency responders. He recounted that he had walked past a group of people who, according to him, were “laughing” and “pointing at him.” Eatherly claimed that an unidentified man in the group ordered him to leave; immediately afterward, the man approached Eatherly, telling him, “I have PTSD” (post-traumatic stress disorder). “He said, ‘Start giving me all that “chimp out” shit and I’m going to hit you’; and he hit me—he started beating me up—even after I had to defend myself by shooting him,” Eatherly recounted in the video.

Both men were shot and transported to nearby hospitals, where they remain in stable condition, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reported. Although both men were initially detained, the unidentified individual involved is no longer in custody and was later released to medical personnel, the Sheriff’s Office added.

Although authorities did not provide a description of the victim, a witness who claimed to have seen the other man being loaded into an ambulance described him to the Associated Press as a Black individual.

It remains unclear how many firearms were involved, how the shooting unfolded, or what circumstances triggered it.
