Gobierno de Trump anuncia su retirada de la Unesco a finales de 2026

(LPL/AFP) – El Gobierno del presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, anunció este martes la retirada de su país de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura (Unesco), efectiva el 31 de diciembre de 2026, debido a que la membresía en la organización no contribuye a sus intereses nacionales.

“Hoy, Estados Unidos informó a la directora general, Audrey Azoulay, sobre su decisión de retirarse de la Unesco. Continuar participando en la Unesco no redunda en el interés nacional de Estados Unidos”, indicó la portavoz del Departamento de Estado, Tammy Bruce, en un comunicado.
Bruce insistió en que la agencia internacional trabaja “para promover causas sociales y culturales divisivas” y su “enfoque desproporcionado” a la “agenda globalista” propuesta por los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible de la ONU, que advierten, contradicen la política exterior de “Estados Unidos primero” promovida por Trump.

“La decisión de la Unesco de admitir al ‘Estado de Palestina’ como Estado Miembro es sumamente problemática, contraria a la política estadounidense y contribuyó a la proliferación de la retórica antiisraelí dentro de la organización”, insiste el comunicado.

Trump, que ya había anunciado la retirada del país de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) en enero pasado, tomó acciones similares durante su primer mandato (2017-2021), terminando las membresías de la Unesco, la OMS, el Consejo de Derechos Humanos de la ONU, el Acuerdo de París sobre el cambio climático y el pacto nuclear con Irán.
Tras asumir el poder en 2021, el ahora expresidente Joe Biden revirtió estas decisiones y regresó el país a la Unesco, la OMS y el pacto sobre el clima.

Según la portavoz del Departamento de Estado, a partir de este momento la participación de Washington en organismos internacionales se “centrará en promover los intereses estadounidenses con claridad y convicción”.

Estados Unidos continuará siendo miembro con pleno derecho de la Unesco hasta el 31 de diciembre de 2026, día en el que entrará en vigor la retirada, especificó en el comunicado.

Poco después del anuncio, la directora general de la Unesco, Audrey Azoulay, dijo lamentar profundamente la decisión del presidente Trump de retirar de nuevo a su país de la organización, pero aseguró que estaban preparados para ello, incluido a nivel presupuestario.

Esta sería la tercera retirada de Estados Unidos de la Unesco, después de que el entonces presidente Ronald Reagan ordenara la salida en 1984 bajo acusaciones de “politización excesiva” de la organización.

Trump Administration Announces Withdrawal from UNESCO at the End of 2026

(LPL/AFP) – The administration of President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that the United States will withdraw from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), effective December 31, 2026, due to the organization’s membership not serving its national interests.

“Today, the United States informed Director-General Audrey Azoulay of its decision to withdraw from UNESCO. Continued participation in UNESCO is not in the national interest of the United States,” State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said in a statement.
Bruce insisted that the international agency works “to promote divisive social and cultural causes” and its “disproportionate focus” on the “globalist agenda” proposed by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which she warned contradicts the “America First” foreign policy promoted by Trump.

“UNESCO’s decision to admit the ‘State of Palestine’ as a Member State is highly problematic, contrary to US policy, and contributed to the proliferation of anti-Israel rhetoric within the organization,” the statement insists.

Trump, who had already announced the country’s withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO) last January, took similar actions during his first term (2017-2021), terminating the country’s membership in UNESCO, the WHO, the UN Human Rights Council, the Paris Agreement on climate change, and the Iran nuclear deal.

After taking office in 2021, former President Joe Biden reversed these decisions and returned the country to UNESCO, the WHO, and the climate pact.

According to the State Department spokesperson, from now on, Washington’s participation in international organizations will “focus on promoting US interests with clarity and conviction.”

The United States will remain a full member of UNESCO until December 31, 2026, the date on which the withdrawal will take effect, the statement specified.

Shortly after the announcement, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said she deeply regretted President Trump’s decision to withdraw her country from the organization again, but assured that they were prepared for it, including at the budgetary level.

This would be the third withdrawal of the United States from UNESCO, after then-President Ronald Reagan ordered the withdrawal in 1984, citing accusations of “excessive politicization” of the organization.
