Three Hispanics disappeared in the Mississippi River after an afternoon of fishing near Millington

(LPL) – A large search and rescue operation is underway to locate three Hispanic men who went missing yesterday evening while fishing and swimming in the Mississippi River near Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park, northwest of Memphis.

According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), the men were last seen around 7:15 p.m. enjoying recreational activities on a sandbar south of the park’s boat ramp. Authorities initially received a report that four people were in distress, but later confirmed that one of them managed to safely exit the water. The other three remain missing.

The first phase of the search took place Tuesday night with support from multiple local and state agencies. The operation included boats, divers, and drones. However, due to poor visibility, the search was suspended around 10:30 p.m. Today, teams resumed operations at 8:30 a.m. with reinforcements.

In total, search and rescue units from the SCSO, the Department of Homeland Security, the Shelby, Millington, and Tipton fire departments, the Memphis Police Harbor Patrol and Aviation, as well as personnel from the Tennessee State Parks are participating.

So far, the identities of the missing men have not been released, but according to local media, the three missing men were Honduran. Authorities continue to treat the case as an active search and rescue operation.

The area where the incident occurred is known for strong currents and sudden changes in river depth, which may have contributed to the emergency.

The SCSO has asked the community to stay away from the search area and has reiterated the importance of wearing life jackets and exercising extreme caution in the river.

The situation is still developing.
