Hombre asesinado a tiros en el barrio de Mitchell Heights; su familia exige justicia

(LPL/FOX13) -Un hombre murió tras un tiroteo en el barrio de Mitchell Heights el domingo por la tarde, según el Departamento de Policía de Memphis (MPD).

La policía informó que los agentes acudieron poco antes de la 1 p. m. a la cuadra 3300 de la avenida Buchanan, cerca de la avenida Jackson, donde encontraron a un hombre con una herida de bala. La víctima, identificada por la familia como Michael Owens Jr., fue declarada muerta en el lugar, según el MPD.

Los investigadores informaron que buscan un vehículo gris oscuro o plateado que se cree fue el utilizado en el tiroteo.

No se han anunciado arrestos.

Mientras la policía continúa investigando, la familia de la víctima dijo que está teniendo dificultades para procesar la repentina pérdida. Sandra Hawthorne, tía de la víctima, comentó que se enteró del tiroteo por una llamada telefónica el domingo por la mañana.
“Recibimos una llamada telefónica diciendo que a mi sobrino le habían disparado en la cabeza en la calle Buchanan, y todos vinimos aquí”, dijo Hawthorne.

La policía bloqueó la calle mientras familiares y vecinos se congregaban en las inmediaciones, intentando comprender qué había sucedido.

Hawthorne comentó que su sobrino, Owens Jr., era conocido en la comunidad y dejó atrás a sus hijos y seres queridos.

“No sobrevivió. Se fue demasiado pronto. Mi sobrino era una buena persona. Ayudó a la comunidad y a todo. Tuvo hijos. Es simplemente terrible”, dijo Hawthorne.

Los familiares describieron a Owens como alguien que a menudo ayudaba a la gente del vecindario y se mantenía conectado con la comunidad donde creció.

“Y lo hizo, como dije, ayudó en esta comunidad”, dijo Hawthorne. “Esta calle, justo aquí, comenzaba. Y su madre vive a la vuelta de la esquina. Así que aquí es donde han estado en Mitchell Heights. Y le quitaron la vida en Mitchell Heights”.

Sus seres queridos dijeron que esperan que alguien presente información que pueda ayudar a la policía a identificar a los responsables.

“Queremos justicia. Queremos justicia. De verdad que queremos justicia”, dijo Hawthorne. “Se está hablando mucho. Pero necesitamos justicia”.

El Departamento de Policía de Memphis informó que la investigación continúa.

Man shot, killed in Mitchell Heights neighborhood; family calls for justice

(LPL/FOX13) – A man died after a shooting in the Mitchell Heights neighborhood Sunday afternoon, according to the Memphis Police Department (MPD).

Police said officers responded just before 1 p.m. to the 3300 block of Buchanan Avenue off Jackson Avenue, where they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound, police said. The victim, identified by family as Michael Owens Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene, MPD said.

Investigators said they are searching for a dark gray or silver vehicle believed to have been used in the shooting.

No arrests have been announced.

While police continued to investigate, the victim’s family said they are struggling to process the sudden loss. Sandra Hawthorne, the victim’s aunt, said she learned about the shooting through a phone call Sunday morning.
“We got a phone call and said that my nephew had been shot in the head on Buchanan Street, and we all got over here,” Hawthorne said.

Police blocked off the street as family members and neighbors gathered nearby, trying to understand what had happened.

Hawthorne said her nephew, Owens Jr., was known in the community and left behind children and loved ones.

“He didn’t make it. He was gone too soon. My nephew was a good person. He helped the community and everything. He got kids. It’s just a terrible thing,” Hawthorne said.

Family members described Owens as someone who often helped people in the neighborhood and stayed connected to the community where he grew up.

“And he did, like I said, he helped out in this community,” Hawthorne said. “This street right here began. And his mom, his mother, stays right around the corner. So this is where they’ve been in Mitchell Heights. And they took his life in Mitchell Heights.”

Loved ones said they are hoping someone will come forward with information that could help police identify those responsible.

“We want to get justice. We want justice. We really want justice,” Hawthorne said. “And there’s a lot being said. But we need justice.”

The Memphis Police Department said the investigation is ongoing.
