Governor Lee explained that the guards will serve as support for the Memphis Police Department (MPD), will not make arrests, will not issue warrants, and will not carry weapons unless authorized by local authorities.
The mayor’s office has launched a website to explain the troops’ role, outline citizens’ rights at potential checkpoints, and receive community feedback. “We want every Memphian to feel safe. This effort is not the beginning, but the acceleration of a plan to reduce crime,” Lee said.
However, the arrival of the troops raises questions and criticism. State Representative GA Hardaway warned that the impact could be temporary if the root causes of the violence are not addressed.
The Latino community has expressed concern about the possibility of an increase in ICE operations, even affecting people with legal status. Local leaders are asking for clarity and assurances that the operation will not result in immigration detentions.
On Saturday, dozens of protesters marched in front of City Hall to demand less military presence and more investment in education, youth programs, and health care. Other sectors, however, see the measure as an opportunity to reduce the carjacking and homicide rates that have plagued the city.
Authorities have not specified how long the agents will remain in Memphis, but have indicated that they will remain in the city “as long as necessary” to reduce the violence.
