Dog shot and killed by MLGW investigator after exiting home

(LPL) – A dog was shot and killed by a Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) investigator after—according to authorities—it escaped from a home and lunged at workers who were investigating a possible case of utility theft.

The incident occurred around 10:50 a.m. Thursday in the 6500 block of Waydawn Drive, where Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) deputies responded following a report regarding animal welfare.

According to the SCSO, two MLGW employees were at the home investigating possible electricity theft. The workers identified themselves and explained the reason for their visit, the company stated.

While one person was away from the doorway, her boyfriend’s dog ran out of the house when the door was opened and headed toward the workers. MLGW stated that the animal charged directly at one of the employees, who was forced to defend himself.

The MLGW investigator fired a shot that struck and killed the dog, according to authorities. SCSO detectives are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The owner, Bryan McGarah, identified the dog as Snow and disputed the claim that she posed a threat.

McGarah told FOX13 that Snow was part of his family and insisted the animal would not have attacked the worker. He also stated that he plans to seek legal counsel and is considering filing a lawsuit against MLGW.

“She’s like a member of my family,” McGarah told the news outlet.

FOX13 also reported obtaining surveillance camera footage related to the encounter.

As the investigation continues, authorities have yet to determine the exact circumstances that led to the shooting and whether the investigator’s actions were justified under the circumstances.
