Police car chase ends in tragedy: passenger in fugitive’s vehicle dies following a violent collision with other cars
(LPL) – A woman died and two other people were injured—including a man accused of fleeing from authorities—during a pursuit that ended in a multi-vehicle crash in Memphis, the Memphis Safety Task Force (MSTF) reported.
The driver, identified as 32-year-old Justin Thomas, faces charges of vehicular homicide, possession of controlled substances, speeding, and evading authorities.
According to the U.S. Marshals Service, MSTF agents were monitoring Thomas in the 800 block of Red Leaf Lane, as he had previously fled from an attempted arrest and had an active warrant for a weapons-related charge.
When Thomas left the scene in a matte-black Cadillac accompanied by Renisha Thompson, agents reported that he performed several evasive maneuvers and U-turns to avoid surveillance.
Subsequently, Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers attempted to stop him near West Shelby Drive and South Third Street. Thomas allegedly fled, triggering a pursuit.
The chase ended near the intersection of West Levi Road and South Third Street, where the Cadillac collided with four other vehicles. Thompson was ejected from the car and died at the scene.
Thomas was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Two other drivers sustained minor injuries.
Authorities also noted that Thomas had been charged in August with evading an officer during a separate pursuit in Memphis. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
