Chilean President declares state of catastrophe in eastern Santiago area devastated by torrent of water
(LPL) – Chilean President José Antonio Kast declared a state of catastrophe for the Las Condes area in eastern Santiago, which was struck by a torrent of water that swept away vehicles and buses along the capital’s steep streets.
«Based on the information gathered (…) and the need to mobilize all resources to tackle the emergency, I have ordered that the Las Condes commune be declared a catastrophe zone,» Kast announced via his account on the social network X.
Chilean authorities reported that the emergency in Santiago—occurring amidst heavy rains affecting the country’s central-southern region—has so far left six people injured and caused extensive property damage.
After flying over the area, the Presidential Delegate for the Metropolitan Region, Germán Codina, reported that the injured include a one-year-old child who suffered a fracture, according to EFE.
Codina pointed to the blockage of two drainage conduits as the likely source of the intense torrent and linked the incident’s aftermath to a wildfire that occurred last summer in the Andean foothills, which destroyed the vegetation holding the soil in place.
The National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred) for the Metropolitan Region provided updates in the afternoon regarding the situation, noting that homes had also been affected by the rushing water and mud.
Videos shared by citizens on social media show cars and a public bus caught in the flow, with passengers visible both inside and on the roof of the vehicle.
The rain also caused flooding that affected various buildings, including the emergency department of a medical clinic, according to local press reports. «We have gone out [to help] primarily people trapped inside their vehicles, in homes where mud has entered, and at universities where people have also become isolated,» explained Giorgio Tromben, Commander of the Santiago Fire Department.
The official added, «We have to extract people from locations that are difficult to access, in addition to the professional work being carried out by our rescue teams.»
The storm system currently affecting parts of Chile caused one fatality yesterday; this adds to the toll of at least 15 deaths resulting from a weather system that struck 10 of the country’s 16 regions earlier this year.
The weather event left more than 3,000 people affected and caused rivers to overflow and flooding to occur, as well as damage to infrastructure.
