Se eleva a 219 la cifra de personas fallecidas por el terremoto en Colombia

(LPL/EN) –La Asociación Colombiana de Ciudades Capitales (Asocapitales) elevó este martes a 219 la cifra de personas fallecidas y a más de 600 las heridas por el devastador terremoto de magnitud 7,4 que sacudió el occidente y centro de Colombia.

“El balance preliminar asciende a 219 personas fallecidas en Colombia, 165 de ellas se registran en ciudades capitales, que concentran el 97,6% de las víctimas mortales reportadas hasta el momento”, explicó la institución.

Cali, capital del departamento de Valle del Cauca, tiene 85 fallecidos, seguida de Pereira, capital de Risaralda, que limita con San José del Palmar, epicentro del terremoto, y suma 66 víctimas mortales.

La cifra aportada solo recoge el desglose de las capitales del país, por lo que el balance no incluye las cifras de muertos y heridos en pueblos y zonas rurales de los departamentos de Valle del Cauca, Risaralda y Chocó, los más afectados por la tragedia, ya que el Gobierno colombiano no actualiza datos desde el mediodía del lunes.

El balance tampoco incluye cifras de desaparecidos, pese a que miles de personas han informado de que no encuentran a familiares y amigos.

En esos tres departamentos, así como en Caldas y Quindío, en la zona cafetera del centro del país, hubo colapso de edificios, casas y daños en su infraestructura hospitalaria, aeropuertos, servicios públicos y sistemas de transporte.

Pereira, Cali, Quibdó, Manizales y Armenia son las principales ciudades que permanecen en alerta roja por la magnitud de los daños, y en total cuentan al menos 165 edificios colapsados.

La magnitud de la emergencia sísmica —cuyo epicentro se localizó en San José del Palmar, Chocó— ha desbordado los servicios básicos y la infraestructura hospitalaria, escolar, vial y aeroportuaria en los departamentos de Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Risaralda y el Eje Cafetero.

Frente al desabastecimiento operativo en las zonas más golpeadas, el Ministerio del Interior anunció el envío inmediato de una flota de carrotanques con agua potable y suministros de combustible hacia Pereira para garantizar el funcionamiento de la maquinaria de rescate y los centros asistenciales.

Death toll from Colombia earthquake rises to 219

(LPL/EN) – The Colombian Association of Capital Cities (Asocapitales) raised the death toll to 219 and the number of injured to over 600 on Tuesday following the devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck western and central Colombia.

“The preliminary toll stands at 219 deaths in Colombia; 165 of these occurred in capital cities, which account for 97.6% of the fatalities reported so far,” the organization explained.

Cali, the capital of the Valle del Cauca department, has recorded 85 deaths, followed by Pereira—the capital of Risaralda, which borders the earthquake’s epicenter at San José del Palmar—with 66 fatalities.

The figures provided cover only the country’s capital cities; consequently, the tally excludes death and injury counts from towns and rural areas in the Valle del Cauca, Risaralda, and Chocó departments—the regions hardest hit by the tragedy—as the Colombian government has not updated its data since midday Monday.

The report also omits figures regarding missing persons, despite thousands of people reporting that they are unable to locate family members and friends.

In those three departments, as well as in Caldas and Quindío (located in the country’s central coffee-growing region), buildings and homes collapsed, and damage was sustained by hospital infrastructure, airports, public utilities, and transportation systems.

Pereira, Cali, Quibdó, Manizales, and Armenia remain the major cities under red alert due to the extent of the damage, with a combined total of at least 165 collapsed buildings. The scale of the seismic emergency—with its epicenter in San José del Palmar, Chocó—has overwhelmed basic services and hospital, school, road, and airport infrastructure across the departments of Chocó, Valle del Cauca, and Risaralda, as well as the Coffee Axis.

To address the shortage of operational resources in the hardest-hit areas, the Ministry of the Interior announced the immediate dispatch of a fleet of tanker trucks carrying potable water and fuel supplies to Pereira, ensuring the continued operation of rescue machinery and healthcare facilities.
