(LPL) – Un sismo se registró la tarde de este jueves en el noreste de Missouri, con un epicentro ubicado aproximadamente a 80 millas al norte de Memphis, Tennessee.

De acuerdo con el Center for Earthquake Research and Information de la Universidad de Memphis, el movimiento telúrico ocurrió cerca de Cooter, en la región del Bootheel, a las 12:59 p.m. La magnitud preliminar fue de 3.9, aunque el Servicio Geológico de Estados Unidos (USGS) la ajustó posteriormente a 4.0.

El epicentro fue localizado en una zona rural del condado de Pemiscot, Missouri, con una profundidad estimada de 12 kilómetros. The epicenter was located in a rural area of ​​Pemiscot County, Missouri, at an estimated depth of 12 kilometers. Despite its moderate intensity, the earthquake was felt in various parts of the region, including areas of northern Mississippi, eastern Arkansas, and western Tennessee.

According to USGS reports, more than 650 people reported feeling the tremor, describing it as a light to moderate shaking.

Hours after the main event—around 2:30 p.m.—a magnitude 2.1 aftershock was recorded in the same area; no injuries or damage were reported.

The event occurred within the seismic zone of the New Madrid Fault System, one of the most well-known regions for seismic activity in the central United States.
