Terremoto en Afganistán: reportan más de 1.100 muertos y 3.200 heridos

(LPL/EN) – Al menos 1.124 personas murieron y 3.251 resultaron heridas tras el terremoto de magnitud 6 que sacudió la noche del domingo la provincia de Kunar y otras regiones cercanas de Afganistán.

La Media Luna Roja Afgana detalló en la red social X que el epicentro se localizó en la provincia de Kunar y que el sismo provocó graves pérdidas humanas y materiales en distritos como Nurgal, Sawkay, Watapur y Manugai, además de áreas de Laghman y Nangarhar.
“Muchas personas siguen atrapadas bajo los escombros y las labores de rescate continúan”, agregó la organización.

Al iniciar el temblor, registrado a las 23:47 del domingo hora local (19:17 GMT), le siguieron al menos dos réplicas de magnitud 5,2.

Las autoridades temen que el balance siga aumentando a medida que se accede a las zonas más remotas.
Los talibanes reconocieron la magnitud del desastre. “Lamentablemente, el terremoto de esta noche ha causado muertes y daños materiales en algunas de nuestras provincias orientales”, escribió en la red social X el portavoz, Zabihullah Mujahid.
“Los funcionarios locales y los residentes están actualmente involucrados en labores de rescate. Equipos de apoyo del centro y de provincias cercanas también están en camino, y se utilizarán todos los recursos disponibles para salvar vidas”, añadió.

La provincia de Kunar, hasta ahora la más afectada, esta situada en la frontera con Pakistán, en la cordillera del Hindu Kush. La precariedad de las carreteras y un acceso casi inexistente a las comunicaciones en las zonas rurales dificultan la evaluación de daños y la coordinación de la ayuda.

Earthquake in Afghanistan: More than 1,100 dead and 3,200 injured

(LPL/EN) – At least 1,124 people died and 3,251 were injured after the magnitude 6.0 earthquake that struck Kunar province and other nearby regions of Afghanistan on Sunday night.

The Afghan Red Crescent Society reported on social media that the epicenter was located in Kunar province and that the quake caused severe human and material losses in districts such as Nurgal, Sawkay, Watapur, and Manugai, as well as areas of Laghman and Nangarhar.
“Many people are still trapped under the rubble, and rescue efforts are continuing,” the organization added.

The earthquake, which began at 11:47 p.m. local time on Sunday (7:17 p.m. GMT), was followed by at least two aftershocks of magnitude 5.2.

Authorities fear the toll will continue to rise as more remote areas are accessed.
The Taliban acknowledged the magnitude of the disaster. “Unfortunately, tonight’s earthquake has caused deaths and property damage in some of our eastern provinces,” spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid wrote on social media.
“Local officials and residents are currently involved in rescue efforts. Support teams from the center and nearby provinces are also on the way, and all available resources will be used to save lives,” he added.

Kunar province, so far the hardest hit, is located on the border with Pakistan, in the Hindu Kush mountain range. Poor roads and almost nonexistent access to communications in rural areas make damage assessment and aid coordination difficult.
