Mejia then pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots, killing Sandoval.

Mejia broadcast live on Facebook from his car after the incident, claiming he acted in self-defense and that he would turn himself in to the authorities. However, security camera footage from the mall contradicts his account: it shows Sandoval unarmed during the altercation.

The investigation has revealed that both men had criminal records. Mejia has been involved in multiple cases, with active charges including robbery, weapons offenses, drug offenses, and evading arrest. But Sandoval also had a criminal record: according to a report by Action News 5, he was arrested in 2021 after a shooting near a Memphis elementary school, where, according to the police affidavit, he was selling drugs from a vehicle with other young people when an argument broke out over a gun. In that incident, he was charged with second-degree attempted murder.

With these revelations, the mall shooting not only reflects an immediate tragedy, but also a deeper history of violence and shared backgrounds between victim and perpetrator.
