More than 125,000 people have cast early votes in Shelby County—a 60% increase over 2022

(LPL) – More than 125,000 people have cast early votes in Shelby County for the November 3 general election—a turnout approximately 60% higher than what was recorded at the same point during the 2022 election cycle, according to data from the Tennessee Secretary of State’s office, compiled by Tennessee Firefly.

As of the 11th day of early voting—Monday, October 26—Shelby County had recorded 125,312 early and absentee votes. At the same stage in the 2022 election, 78,026 votes had been cast, while in 2018, the figure reached 136,056. This indicates that current turnout is significantly higher than it was four years ago, though it remains 7.9% below the levels seen in 2018.

It should be noted that the early voting period concludes this Thursday, October 28.

Mark Goins, Tennessee’s coordinator of elections, told WREG that the county is seeing an average of 12,000 to 15,000 voters per day. He also noted that statewide turnout is trending higher than it was during the 2022 election.

Statewide turnout also on the rise

Across Tennessee, 913,512 people had cast early or mail-in ballots as of October 26. This figure represents a 50% increase compared to the 609,758 votes recorded at the same point in 2022. However, it remains 14% below the 1,062,728 votes registered during the 2018 elections.

The election coordinator estimated that the state would reach one million early voters by the close of polls on Tuesday, October 27—though this figure is a projection rather than the confirmed total from the daily report consulted. Early voting began on October 14 and will conclude on Thursday, October 29. Those who do not participate during this period may head to the polls on Tuesday, November 3, the official election day.

What is at stake in the elections

Tennessee voters will elect a new governor, a U.S. senator, representatives for the state’s nine U.S. House districts, and members of the state General Assembly. They will also decide on three amendments to the state Constitution concerning bail for certain offenses, a prohibition on a state property tax, and the expansion of rights for crime victims.

Additionally, in Shelby County, there will be municipal elections in Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, Lakeland, and Millington, alongside other local contests and ballot measures for the city of Memphis.

Early voter turnout provides an initial gauge of electoral interest, though these figures may still shift during the final days of voting and on election day itself.
