FBI Agent Shoots and Kills Venezuelan Man Who Allegedly Opened Fire at a Homeless Encampment in Chicago

(LPL) – An FBI agent shot and killed a 27-year-old Venezuelan man who, according to federal authorities, had opened fire on a group of people at a homeless encampment in Chicago.

The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Monday, October 26, near the intersection of 18th Street and Union Avenue in the Pilsen neighborhood, on the city’s southwest side.

According to the FBI, the agent—who was off-duty and returning home in an official vehicle—observed the man firing at a group of people. The agent intervened to stop the threat and opened fire on the individual.

The man was identified as 27-year-old Oscar Isaya-Corrales, a native of Venezuela. Authorities reported that he died from his injuries. No other injuries were reported during the incident.

He had an outstanding arrest warrant

Federal officials stated that Corrales was in the United States without legal immigration status; he had been apprehended at the southern border in October 2023 before being released into the country.

Additionally, court records indicate that he had an outstanding arrest warrant for failing to appear in court in connection with an alleged theft at a Nordstrom store in Chicago. That case stemmed from his arrest in May, when he was accused of stealing five necklaces.

According to reports, police discovered a firearm beneath an electric bicycle that the man was allegedly using.

Use of force under investigation

The FBI confirmed that its Inspection Division is reviewing the shooting, in accordance with the agency’s standard procedures for incidents involving its agents. For his part, Chicago Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez requested an independent investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the use of force and to determine what occurred before and after the shots were fired.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not released all the details of the incident.
