Prosecutor’s Office Drops Charges Against Three Arrested During “No Kings” Protest in Downtown Memphis

(LPL) – The Prosecutor’s Office has dropped charges against three men arrested during the “No Kings” protest held in downtown Memphis, according to court records.

Charges were dismissed against Rueben Burch, Adam Nelson, and David Rahaim, who had been detained following an incident near Second Street and Beale Street, in Robert R. Church Park. According to the Memphis Police Department, officers responded to a disturbance after participants began marching in the street, blocking traffic and allegedly doing so without a valid permit.

Court records indicate that all three cases were marked as nolle prosequi, meaning the prosecution decided not to proceed with the case. Furthermore, no additional court costs had been recorded for the defendants as of April 15.

The organization Indivisible Memphis, which helped organize the protest held on March 28, welcomed the decision, noting that the charges “never should have been filed.” However, the group also asserted that this move does not represent true accountability and demanded greater transparency from authorities.

Among their demands is the immediate release of body-worn camera and police vehicle footage, as well as information regarding the officers involved—including whether any have been suspended and what disciplinary measures might be applied.

Since the incident, four officers from the Memphis Police Department have been placed on administrative leave, while activists continue to pressure city officials to take further action.

The case has reignited the debate within the city regarding police handling of protests and the need for greater transparency in such operations.
