MLGW restores power to 99.7% of customers following devastating storm

(LPL) – The restoration of electrical service in Memphis and neighboring cities is entering its final stage. MLGW reported on Friday that 99.72% of its customers have power again, nearly a week after the powerful storm caused widespread damage to the area’s electrical grid.

According to the official outage map from Memphis Light, Gas and Water—updated at 3:26 p.m. on Friday, August 28—a total of 427,119 customers have power, while 1,204 remain without service, representing 0.28% of customers within MLGW’s service area.

This figure marks significant progress compared to the initial impact of the storm on Saturday, August 22, which left approximately 140,000 customers without power and affected nearly a third of the electrical grid in less than an hour, according to MLGW.

Over the past few days, MLGW crews and contract workers from other regions have worked around the clock to repair poles, lines, and other components of the damaged infrastructure.

By Thursday, MLGW had reported restoring service to approximately 137,500 customers, while about 2,500 remained without power. The company expected to further reduce that number overnight and complete restoration for the remaining customers between Friday and Saturday.

The most complex cases remain

Although the vast majority of customers have regained service, MLGW has warned that the remaining outages generally involve smaller groups but are more complex, with some requiring specific repairs in particular neighborhoods or properties.

The company also explained that some homes damaged by the storm might require additional work before they can be safely reconnected to the grid.

This recovery follows a particularly difficult few days for thousands of families in the Memphis area. Some residents went more than 100 hours without electricity, facing high temperatures and food spoilage due to the lack of refrigeration.

MLGW has asked customers who remain without service to continue reporting outages to ensure that every individual issue is identified and addressed.

As crews finish electrical repairs, the company has indicated that it will subsequently focus its efforts on addressing reports related to street lighting.
