Mujer que mató a pastor en Memphis sentenciada a casi 21 años de prisión

(LPL/WREG) – Una mujer declarada culpable de asesinar a un pastor en Memphis y herir a su esposa en 2019 fue sentenciada el martes a casi 21 años de prisión.

Latoshia Daniels, de 46 años, fue sentenciada a 20 años por asesinato en segundo grado y 11 meses y 29 días por imprudencia temeraria, condenas que se cumplirán simultáneamente.
El juez declaró que el tribunal determinó que Daniels actuó intencionalmente al comprar el arma en Sherwood, Arkansas, conducir hasta Memphis, reunirse con el pastor Brodes Perry y su esposa en su apartamento de Collierville y luego asesinar a Perry.

“Un corazón roto no justifica la muerte de alguien”, declaró el juez.
Antes de la sentencia, el hijo de Daniels habló entre lágrimas en nombre de su madre.
“Mamá, creo que nunca he dicho esto en voz alta”, dijo Deundre Davis, hijo de Daniels. Lo que más me duele, pero me llena de admiración, es saber cuánto sufrías emocionalmente, a la vez que elegías ser fuerte por los demás. Te presentabas cada día con una sonrisa.

Se esperaba que Daniels fuera sentenciada entre 15 y 25 años; su defensa solicitó 13,5 años.

“Si bien respetamos la decisión del juez, discrepamos con ella”, dijo Lauren Fuchs, una de las abogadas defensoras de Daniels.

“Trabajamos en estos tribunales a diario, asistimos a las sentencias a diario, y en mis 26 años de ejercicio de la abogacía, nunca he tenido una clienta que haya trabajado tanto en sí misma, que haya trabajado para otras personas, que haya escrito libros para otras familias que están pasando por esto”, dijo Arthur Horne, uno de los abogados defensores de Daniels.

El fiscal del caso afirmó que la sentencia era la que esperaba y declaró a WREG que ha estado en comunicación con la familia de la víctima. “Aprecian la justicia, pero no se puede evitar que no haya sucedido, así que están actuando tan bien como se esperaba”, dijo Kevin McAlphin, fiscal.

El equipo de la defensa afirma que planea apelar el caso.
En noviembre, Daniels fue declarado culpable de asesinato en segundo grado y conducta temeraria por el jurado por la muerte a tiros de Perry en su apartamento de Collierville.

Daniels también fue declarado culpable de conducta temeraria por herir a Tabitha, la esposa de Perry, durante el ataque.

El jurado emitió un veredicto en tan solo unas horas tras un juicio de cuatro días.
Durante el juicio, la fiscalía argumentó que Daniels mató al pastor Perry tras una supuesta aventura y planeó el ataque, en el que también resultó herida la esposa de Perry.

WREG preguntó a la defensa cómo se sentía Daniels tras su condena.

“Creo que está un poco en shock. Creo que le cuesta aceptar la idea de que probablemente pasará otra década en prisión, pero también creo que entiende que esto sucedió por una razón”, dijo el abogado defensor Arthur Horne.

Daniels fue inicialmente acusada de cargos más graves de asesinato en primer grado, pero el jurado optó por cargos menores tras escuchar su testimonio.

(LPL/WREG) – A woman found guilty of murdering a Memphis pastor and injuring his wife back in 2019 was sentenced to nearly 21 years on Tuesday.

Latoshia Daniels, 46, was sentenced to 20 years for second-degree murder and 11 months and 29 days for reckless endangerment, which will run concurrently.
The judge said the court found that Daniels was intentional with her actions of buying the gun in Sherwood, Ark., driving to Memphis, meeting with Pastor Brodes Perry and his wife at their Collierville apartment and then murdering Perry.

“A broken heart does not justify someone dying,” said the judge.
Prior to her sentencing, Daniels’ son spoke tearfully on his mother’s behalf.
“Mom, I don’t ever think I’ve said this out loud,” said Deundre Davis, Daniels’ son. “What hurts my heart the most, but fills it with so much admiration, is that the same time is knowing how much you were hurting, emotionally, while still choosing to be strong for everyone else. You showed up every day with a smile.”
Daniels was expected to be sentenced between 15 to 25 years; her defense team asked for 13.5 years.

“While we respect the judge’s decision, we do disagree with it,” said Lauren Fuchs, one of Daniels’ defense attorneys.

“We work in these courtrooms every day, we go to sentencings every day, and in my 26 years practicing law, I’ve never had a client that has done so much work on herself, work for other people, writing books for other families that are going through this,” said Arthur Horne, one of Daniels’ defense attorneys.

The prosecutor on the case said the sentence is what he expected, and told WREG that he has been in communication with the victim’s family.

“They appreciate the justice, but you can’t make it not have happened so they’re doing as well as expected,” said Kevin McAlphin, prosecutor.

The defense team says they plan to appeal the case.
Back in November, Daniels was convicted of second-degree murder and reckless endangerment by a jury for the shooting death of Perry at his Collierville apartment.

Daniels was also convicted of reckless endangerment for wounding Perry’s wife, Tabitha, during the attack.

Jurors returned a verdict in just hours following a four-day trial.
During the trial, prosecutors argued that Daniels killed pastor Perry after an alleged affair and planned the attack, which also injured Perry’s wife.

WREG asked the defense how Daniels felt after her conviction.

“I think she’s a little bit in shock. I think she’s struggling with the idea that she’s probably going to spend another decade in prison, but I think she also understands that, you know, this happened for a reason,” said Defense Attorney Arthur Horne.

Daniels was originally indicted on more serious charges of first-degree murder, but the jury opted for lesser charges after hearing her testimony.
