Trump anuncia despliegue de la Guardia Nacional en Washington y pone a la Policía Metropolitana bajo control federal

(LPL) – El presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, anunció este lunes que pondrá al Departamento de Policía Metropolitana de Washington bajo control federal y desplegará a la Guardia Nacional en la ciudad, al afirmar que la medida busca restablecer el orden en la capital del país.

“Estoy invocando oficialmente la sección 740 de la Ley de Autogobierno del Distrito de Columbia —ustedes saben lo que es— y poniendo al Departamento de Policía Metropolitana de Washington bajo control federal directo”, dijo Trump durante una conferencia de prensa en la Casa Blanca.

El presidente dijo a un grupo de periodistas que sus acciones se dan porque “algo está fuera de control, pero lo vamos a poner bajo control muy rápido, como hicimos en la frontera sur”.
Trump también anunció el despliegue de militares de la Guardia Nacional para ayudar a las autoridades locales.

“Estoy desplegando a la Guardia Nacional para ayudar a restablecer la ley, el orden y la seguridad pública en Washington, y se les va a permitir hacer su trabajo correctamente”, agregó Trump.

La Ley de Autogobierno de 1973 permite al presidente tomar el control de la policía de la ciudad por 48 horas si “determina que existen condiciones especiales de carácter de emergencia” que requieran el uso del Departamento con fines federales. El presidente puede mantener el control por más tiempo si notifica a los presidentes y miembros de alto rango de las comisiones del Congreso que manejan los asuntos legislativos del Distrito de Columbia. Cualquier solicitud de control de la policía de la ciudad por más de 30 días debe convertirse en ley.

El presidente indicó que planea extender la intervención federal más allá del período inicial de 48 horas y que notificará formalmente a las partes correspondientes.

“Haré las notificaciones correspondientes al Congreso y a la alcaldesa”, dijo Trump.

“Tendremos una cooperación total, fluida e integrada en todos los niveles de las fuerzas del orden, y desplegaremos agentes en todo el distrito con una presencia abrumadora”, agregó.

Los agentes, dijo Trump, tendrán autoridad para hacer “lo que les dé la gana”, y añadió que esto irá más allá de la capital del país. “No vamos a perder nuestras ciudades por esto, y esto irá más lejos”.

Acompañado por altos funcionarios de su Gobierno, Trump también prometió tomar medidas contundentes para abordar la indigencia y el deterioro urbano en la capital. “Tenemos barrios marginales aquí. Los vamos a eliminar. Sé que no es políticamente correcto”, dijo Trump.

Trump Announces Deployment of National Guard to Washington and Places Metropolitan Police Under Federal Control

(LPL/CNN) – President Donald Trump announced Monday that he will place the Washington Metropolitan Police Department under federal control and deploy the National Guard to the city, stating that the move seeks to restore order to the nation’s capital.

“I am officially invoking Section 740 of the District of Columbia Self-Government Act—you know what that is—and placing the Washington Metropolitan Police Department under direct federal control,” Trump said during a press conference at the White House.

The president told a group of reporters that his actions are taking place because “something is out of control, but we’re going to get it under control very quickly, just like we did at the southern border.”
Trump also announced the deployment of National Guard troops to assist local authorities.

“I am deploying the National Guard to help restore law, order, and public safety in Washington, and they’re going to be allowed to do their jobs properly,” Trump added.

The Self-Government Act of 1973 allows the president to take control of the city’s police force for 48 hours if he “determines that special conditions of an emergency nature exist” that require the use of the Department for federal purposes. The president can maintain control longer by notifying the chairmen and ranking members of the congressional committees that handle the District of Columbia’s legislative affairs. Any request for control of the city’s police force beyond 30 days must be signed into law.

The president indicated that he plans to extend the federal intervention beyond the initial 48-hour period and will formally notify the appropriate parties.

“I will make the appropriate notifications to Congress and the mayor,” Trump said.

“We will have full, seamless, and integrated cooperation at all levels of law enforcement, and we will deploy officers throughout the District with an overwhelming presence,” he added.

The agents, Trump said, will have the authority to do “whatever they want,” adding that this will extend beyond the nation’s capital. “We’re not going to lose our cities over this, and this will go further.”

Accompanied by senior administration officials, Trump also promised to take decisive action to address homelessness and urban blight in the capital. “We have slums here. We’re going to eliminate them. I know it’s not politically correct,” Trump said.
