(LPL) – Un joven hispano fue condenado a 25 años de prisión por el intento de asesinato de su compañero de trabajo, tras un ataque ocurrido en 2025 en el condado de DeSoto, Mississippi, informaron autoridades judiciales.

El fiscal del distrito, Matthew Barton, confirmó que Jiver Alejandro Melo Domínguez (20), que es originario de México pero se encontraba viviendo en el país de manera ilegal, se declaró culpable del cargo de intento de asesinato. Como parte de la sentencia, deberá cumplir 25 años en el Departamento de Correcciones de Mississippi.

De acuerdo con la investigación, los hechos ocurrieron el 5 de marzo de 2025 en un sitio de construcción en la ciudad de Hernando. Ese día, Melo Domínguez atacó de manera violenta y premeditada a su compañero, José René Artiga País, apuñalándolo en el cuello con un cúter o navaja tipo “box cutter”.

Las autoridades señalaron que el agresor admitió posteriormente haber planeado el ataque, motivado por problemas personales previos entre ambos trabajadores. Tras el incidente, fue detenido por la policía local.

El fiscal Barton indicó que el acusado se encontraba viviendo en Memphis al momento del ataque y afirmó que, tras cumplir su condena, enfrentará un proceso de deportación.

“El acusado enfrentará las consecuencias de sus acciones y posteriormente será devuelto a su país de origen”, declaró Barton en un comunicado.

El caso fue procesado por la Fiscalía del Condado de DeSoto, que destacó la gravedad del ataque y la premeditación como factores clave en la condena. La víctima sobrevivió a las heridas, aunque no se detalló su estado actual de salud.

District Attorney Matthew Barton confirmed that Jiver Alejandro Melo Domínguez (20)—a native of Mexico who was residing in the country illegally—pleaded guilty to the charge of attempted murder. As part of the sentence, he must serve 25 years with the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

According to the investigation, the incident took place on March 5, 2025, at a construction site in the city of Hernando. On that day, Melo Domínguez launched a violent and premeditated attack on his coworker, José René Artiga País, stabbing him in the neck with a utility knife or “box cutter.”

Authorities noted that the assailant subsequently admitted to having planned the attack, motivated by prior personal disputes between the two workers. Following the incident, he was taken into custody by local police.

District Attorney Barton indicated that the defendant was living in Memphis at the time of the attack and stated that, upon completing his prison term, he will face deportation proceedings.

“The defendant will face the consequences of his actions and will subsequently be returned to his country of origin,” Barton declared in a statement.

The case was prosecuted by the DeSoto County District Attorney’s Office, which highlighted the severity of the attack and its premeditated nature as key factors in the conviction. The victim survived his injuries, although details regarding his current health status were not disclosed.

With the guilty plea, the case was formally closed without the need to proceed to trial.
