El senador de Tennessee Brent Taylor anuncia su candidatura por el 9.º Distrito; el congresista Cohen responde

(LPL/WREG) – El senador estatal Brent Taylor anunció el jueves que se postulará para representar al Noveno Distrito Congresional de Tennessee.

«Me entusiasma anunciar mi campaña para representar al centro y al oeste de Tennessee en Washington y luchar para consolidar el legado conservador de Tennessee para las generaciones venideras. El nuevo mapa congresional de Tennessee ha creado una oportunidad para llevar una voz republicana fuerte al Congreso y asegurar un futuro más brillante, más seguro y más conservador para nuestro estado y nuestro país; y estoy listo para ser ese líder», declaró Brent Taylor.

Steven Cohen, un demócrata que actualmente representa al Noveno Distrito en el Congreso, es el único demócrata electo de Tennessee en Washington.
Esto ocurre después de que el Senado de Tennessee aprobara la nueva propuesta de mapa congresional, la cual redibuja las líneas de los distritos.
Los nuevos distritos —diseñados por los republicanos estatales— dividen a Memphis y al condado de Shelby en tres distritos, cada uno vinculado a votantes más rurales y conservadores situados fuera de la ciudad, llegando incluso hasta los suburbios de Nashville.

Cohen apareció en el programa News Channel 3 at 3 y afirmó que él ha traído muchos proyectos a su distrito, y que ahora, debido a la redistribución de distritos, es posible que los proyectos futuros no lleguen a Memphis.
Señaló que los tres distritos están divididos de tal manera que dos de ellos están compuestos por un 29 % de votantes negros, mientras que el tercero cuenta con un 31 %.

«Se entendía y se sabía que Brent Taylor estaba involucrado en esto desde el principio y que quería llegar al Congreso. Tanto el congresista Cohen como el representante estatal Justin J. Pearson se postulaban para el Distrito 9; sin embargo, debido a la reciente reconfiguración del mapa de distritos congresuales, ya no se les considera residentes de ese distrito específico.

Cohen anunció que presentará una demanda ante un tribunal estatal en relación con dicho plan, durante una conferencia de prensa celebrada el jueves por la mañana en el centro de Memphis.
Las senadoras estatales Marsha Blackburn y Bill Hagerty han brindado su respaldo al senador Taylor para su candidatura al Congreso.

Las elecciones generales, tanto a nivel estatal como federal, se celebrarán el 3 de noviembre.

TN Senator Brent Taylor announces run for 9th District; Congressman Cohen responds

(LPL/WREG) – State Senator Brent Taylor announced he is running for Tennessee’s Ninth Congressional District on Thursday.

“I am thrilled to announce my campaign to represent Middle and West Tennessee in Washington and fight to cement Tennessee’s conservative legacy for generations to come. Tennessee’s new congressional map has created an opportunity to deliver a strong Republican voice to Congress and secure a brighter, safer, and more conservative future for our state and our country, and I’m ready to be that leader,” said Brent Taylor.

Steven Cohen, a Democrat who currently represents the Ninth District in Congress, is Tennessee’s only elected Democrat in Washington.
This comes after the Tennessee Senate passed the new proposed congressional map, redrawing district lines.
The new districts, by state Republicans, divide Memphis and Shelby County into three districts, each connected to more rural, conservative voters outside the city and as far away as the Nashville suburbs.

Cohen appeared on News Channel 3 at 3 and said that he brings many projects to his district, and now future projects may not come to Memphis because of the redistricting.
He said the three districts are split, where two districts are made up of 29% of Black voters, and the last one is 31%.

“It was understood and known that Brent Taylor was involved in this from the beginning and that he wanted to go to Congress. The maps were held up for him to get the best he could, and if you look at Shelby County, it’s divided into 3 different sections, but there’s a little bulge in the eastern part of Shelby County to get Brent Taylor’s house, in the 9th district,” said Cohen.

“Well, it was a cooked deal from the beginning, it was a rigged deal and rigged for Trump, rigged for Brent Taylor,” said Cohen. “You know I don’t like a statement, of course, that he probably thinks Justin or I will run against him, and we might. To say I’m weak, I don’t know what he means by that, would wants to be weak.

“He’s talking about my leg. I like to use my good leg and kick him with it. With my weak leg, I can’t, but you want to take that shot of my disability, do it, that shows you who Brent Taylor is,” said Cohen.
Congressman Cohen and State Representative Justin J. Pearson were both running for District 9, but with this redrawn congressional map, they’re no longer considered residents in that specific district.

Cohen announced that he will be filing a lawsuit in state court over the plan in a news conference on Thursday morning in downtown Memphis.
State Senators Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty endorsed Senator Taylor for Congress.

The state and federal general election will be held on November 3.
