El Aeropuerto Internacional de Memphis cambia oficialmente de nombre en honor a fundador de FedEx

(LPL) – El Aeropuerto Internacional de Memphis tiene oficialmente un nuevo nombre. El aeropuerto fue rebautizado como Frederick W. Smith International Airport, en homenaje al fundador de FedEx y una de las figuras empresariales más importantes en la historia de Memphis.

El cambio de nombre fue formalizado este martes durante una ceremonia de dedicación en la que participaron representantes de la Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority, integrantes de la familia Smith, ejecutivos de FedEx y líderes cívicos y comunitarios. Durante el evento también se presentó la nueva identidad de la terminal.

La decisión busca reconocer el enorme impacto que Frederick W. Smith tuvo en Memphis. Smith fundó FedEx y convirtió a la ciudad en el centro de operaciones de una de las compañías de transporte y logística más importantes del mundo. El crecimiento de FedEx también transformó al aeropuerto en uno de los principales centros de carga aérea a nivel mundial.

Terry Blue, presidente y director ejecutivo de la autoridad aeroportuaria, destacó que el cambio representa mucho más que modificar el nombre del aeropuerto y señaló que Smith fue un defensor incansable de Memphis, además de filántropo y líder empresarial de alcance global.

A pesar del cambio, los viajeros no tendrán que memorizar un nuevo código: MEM permanecerá como la identificación oficial de tres letras del aeropuerto.

Smith murió en junio de 2025 a los 80 años. Tras su fallecimiento, la autoridad aeroportuaria aprobó una resolución para honrar su legado mediante el cambio de nombre.

El nuevo Frederick W. Smith International Airport busca mantener visible el vínculo entre el empresario, FedEx y una ciudad cuya economía y posición internacional fueron profundamente transformadas por su visión.

Memphis International Airport Officially Renamed in Honor of FedEx Founder

(LPL) – Memphis International Airport officially has a new name. The airport has been renamed Frederick W. Smith International Airport, in tribute to the founder of FedEx and one of the most important business figures in Memphis history.

The name change was formalized this Tuesday during a dedication ceremony attended by representatives from the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority, members of the Smith family, FedEx executives, and civic and community leaders. The terminal’s new branding was also unveiled during the event.

The decision aims to recognize the immense impact Frederick W. Smith had on Memphis. Smith founded FedEx and turned the city into the operational hub for one of the world’s leading transportation and logistics companies. FedEx’s growth also transformed the airport into one of the world’s premier air cargo hubs.

Terry Blue, president and CEO of the airport authority, emphasized that the change represents much more than just a new name for the airport, noting that Smith was a tireless advocate for Memphis, as well as a philanthropist and a business leader with a global reach.

Despite the change, travelers will not have to memorize a new code: MEM will remain the airport’s official three-letter identifier.

Smith passed away in June 2025 at the age of 80. Following his death, the airport authority approved a resolution to honor his legacy through the renaming.

The new Frederick W. Smith International Airport seeks to maintain a visible link between the entrepreneur, FedEx, and a city whose economy and international standing were profoundly transformed by his vision.
