(LPL) –Kimberly Gardner ha dedicado valioso tiempo de su vida a mejorar las oportunidades para los inmigrantes en Memphis, Tennessee. Su compromiso con esta causa se fortaleció en 2019 mientras enseñaba inglés en HopeWorks, una organización sin fines de lucro que ofrece educación para adultos y servicios de empleo en la región. Durante su tiempo allí, Kimberly se percató de que muchos de sus estudiantes inmigrantes poseían títulos universitarios y una formación profesional sólida en sus países de origen, pero enfrentaban desafíos significativos para integrarse en el mercado laboral estadounidense.
Impulsada por esta realidad, Kimberly fundó en 2023 “WhyHireImmigrants”, una iniciativa destinada a resaltar el valor que los profesionales internacionalmente capacitados aportan a las economías locales. WHI se enfoca en diseñar programas de mejora del inglés y estrategias de incentivos para que estos profesionales puedan recuperar su estatus ocupacional previo o explorar nuevas oportunidades laborales en Estados Unidos. Además, la organización ofrece talleres para educadores y empleadores sobre herramientas tecnológicas educativas y colaboración en equipos multilingües, promoviendo así entornos laborales más inclusivos y equitativos.
Uno de los proyectos más destacados de WHI es “Voices of Memphis”. Este proyecto tiene como objetivo presentar a los habitantes de Memphis las historias de sus vecinos inmigrantes, destacando la riqueza cultural y económica que aportan a la ciudad. La idea surgió cuando Kimberly se dio cuenta de que, aunque muchos desconocían el impacto positivo de los inmigrantes en la economía local, era necesario ir más allá de compartir datos y estadísticas. En colaboración con Mike Chavez Esquivel, un director de arte originario de México, Kimberly lanzó “Voices of Memphis”. Ambos se conocieron en el programa de inglés de la Universidad de Memphis y previamente habían trabajado juntos en la revista “Roots of Memphis”, donde estudiantes de inglés de diversas partes del mundo escribían sobre cómo mantenían su herencia cultural en el contexto estadounidense. (LPL) – Kimberly Gardner has dedicated valuable time of her life to improving opportunities for immigrants in Memphis, Tennessee. Her commitment to this cause was strengthened in 2019 while teaching English at HopeWorks, a nonprofit organization that provides adult education and employment services in the region. During her time there, Kimberly realized that many of her immigrant students held university degrees and had strong professional backgrounds in their home countries but faced significant challenges integrating into the U.S. job market.
Motivated by this reality, Kimberly founded “WhyHireImmigrants” (WHI), an initiative aimed at highlighting the value that internationally trained professionals bring to local economies. WHI focuses on designing English improvement programs and incentive strategies to help these professionals regain their previous occupational status or explore new career opportunities in the U.S. Additionally, the organization offers workshops for educators and employers on educational technology tools and collaboration in multilingual teams, promoting more inclusive and equitable work environments.
One of WHI’s most prominent projects is “Voices of Memphis.” This initiative aims to introduce Memphis residents to the stories of their immigrant neighbors, emphasizing the cultural and economic richness they bring to the city. The idea emerged when Kimberly realized that, while many were unaware of immigrants’ positive impact on the local economy, it was essential to go beyond sharing data and statistics. She sought a practical way to showcase how immigrants are revitalizing and enriching Memphis.
