(LPL/WREG) – Cinco hombres resultaron heridos y otro falleció tras un tiroteo en el sureste de Memphis el miércoles, según el Departamento de Policía de Memphis.
Los agentes respondieron a un tiroteo en la cuadra 4000 de South Mendenhall, en el sureste de Memphis, a las 3:29 p. m.
El tiroteo ocurrió frente a una organización sin fines de lucro, Memphis Allies. En 2022, Youth Villages, junto con socios comunitarios, lanzó la iniciativa Memphis Allies en respuesta a la creciente violencia armada en la ciudad.
La policía informó que cinco hombres fueron trasladados del lugar de los hechos y que un hombre fue encontrado muerto en el lugar. Un hombre se encuentra en estado crítico y otros cuatro se encuentran en estado no crítico.
La familia de Matthew Williams, de 22 años, lo identificó como la víctima que murió en el tiroteo.
La madre de Williams dijo que su hijo asistió al evento porque quería un cambio positivo en su vida.
Una fuente en el lugar de los hechos informó a WREG que los disparos se produjeron durante un tiroteo desde un vehículo en movimiento, mientras las personas que se encontraban en el interior se resguardaban en sus hogares.
“No se trata de una relación donde ellos están allá y nosotros estamos acá, hay un solo Memphis, hay un solo problema y hay gente uniéndose para encontrar una solución”, dijo K Durell Cowan, fundadora y directora ejecutiva de Heal 901.
“Cuando sales y te encuentras en estas situaciones, estás en estas comunidades intentando interrumpir y detener la violencia, siempre existe la amenaza de que, aunque yo esté aquí haciendo el bien, en cualquier momento puede continuar, y podría ser uno de nosotros”, dijo Cowan.

(LPL/WREG) –Five men were injured and another died after a shooting in southeast Memphis on Wednesday, according to the Memphis Police Department.
Officers responded to a shooting in the 4000 block of South Mendenhall in southeast Memphis at 3:29 p.m.
The shooting occurred in front of a nonprofit organization, Memphis Allies. In 2022, Youth Villages, along with community partners, launched the Memphis Allies initiative in response to rising gun violence in the city.
Police reported that five men were transported from the scene and one man was found dead at the scene. One man is in critical condition and four others are in non-critical condition.
The family of Matthew Williams, 22, identified him as the victim who died in the shooting.
Williams’ mother said her son attended the event because he wanted a positive change in his life.
A source at the scene told WREG that the shots were fired during a drive-by shooting, while people inside were sheltering in their homes.
“This isn’t a relationship where they’re over there and we’re over here. There’s one Memphis, one problem, and people are coming together to find a solution,” said K Durell Cowan, founder and executive director of Heal 901.
“When you go out and find yourself in these situations, you’re in these communities trying to interrupt and stop violence, there’s always the threat that even if I’m out here doing good, at any moment it could continue, and it could be one of us,” Cowan said.
