Former Memphis-Shelby County Schools Superintendent Accused of Harassing an Assistant
(LPL) – A former employee of Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) has filed a federal lawsuit against the school district, accusing former Superintendent Marie Feagins of exposing herself while naked on two occasions and retaliating after the employee rejected this behavior.
The lawsuit was filed on Thursday, October 29, by Camalyn Turner, who worked directly for Feagins as an executive administrative assistant and special assistant to the superintendent starting in June 2024.
According to the court filing, the first incident occurred on August 19 of that year, while Turner was temporarily staying at Feagins’s residence because her own apartment was not yet ready. The former employee states that Feagins called her downstairs to listen to a conversation she was having with a member of the school board.
However, as she began to descend the stairs, Turner claims she encountered the then-superintendent completely naked, standing at the bottom of the steps and looking at her. The employee states that she immediately returned to her room and locked the door.
The lawsuit alleges that the following day, Feagins stripped her of her duties, reassigned part of her workload to someone else, and informed her that she would be transferred to a different position with a lower salary.
A second incident allegedly took place on October 4, 2024, prior to a University of Memphis basketball event. Turner claims that Feagins asked her to purchase clothing for her, and upon her return with the items, Feagins insisted that she remain in the room while she changed.
When Turner turned away, Feagins reportedly said, “I don’t know why you’re acting like you’ve never seen a naked woman before,” according to the lawsuit.
The former employee maintains that she subsequently faced retaliation and ultimately resigned 11 days after this second incident. The Lawsuit and the District’s Response
Turner accuses the school system of sexual harassment, sex-based discrimination, and retaliation, alleging that it created working conditions that forced her to resign. The lawsuit seeks approximately $1.5 million in compensation, in addition to back pay and damages for emotional distress.
The lawsuit was filed against the Shelby County Board of Education, which operates as MSCS. Feagins is not named as an individual defendant in this case.
A district spokesperson stated that MSCS cannot comment on pending litigation. As of the time of reporting, Feagins had not provided a public response to the allegations.
The school board terminated Feagins in January 2025 for reasons unrelated to those described in this lawsuit. Turner’s allegations have not yet been evaluated by a court.
