(LPL/EN) – El féretro abierto del papa Francisco ha sido depositado en la residencia Casa Santa Marta del Vaticano mientras continúan los ritos de duelo tras su muerte. El féretro será trasladado desde la residencia papal a la basílica de San Pedro este miércoles, donde reposará antes de su funeral, según el Vaticano. En una ruptura con la tradición, el papa Francisco dijo en su testamento final que deseaba ser enterrado en una tumba “simple” en el suelo en la basílica de Santa María la Mayor de Roma, no en la basílica de San Pedro.
El funeral se celebrará el 26 de abril a las 10.00 horas (8.00 GMT) en la plaza de San Pedro. La ceremonia, a la que está previsto que lleguen Jefes de Estado de todo el mundo, estará oficiada por el decano del colegio cardenalicio, Giovanni Battista Re.
Este miércoles, tras un momento de oración, presidido por el carmarlengo, el cardenal Kevin Joseph Farrell, comenzará “la traslación” del cuerpo. La procesión pasará por la plaza Santa Marta y la plaza de los Protomartires Romanos y desde el Arco de las Campanas saldrá a la plaza de San Pedro y entrará en la Basílica Vaticana por la puerta central.
Después en el Altar de la Confesión, bajo el baldaquino, el cardenal camarlengo presidirá la Liturgia de la Palabra, al final de la cual comenzará la visita de los fieles.
Aún no se ha determinado por cuanto tiempo será expuesto el cuerpo del papa Francisco, que hizo algunos cambios en las reglas de los funerales a los pontífices, como se lee en la nueva edición del Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis.
El cuerpo se ha depositado en un único ataúd de madera con el interior de zinc y se expondrá directamente en el féretro abierto, pero no en un catafalco como había sido hasta ahora y tampoco se colocará el báculo papal durante esta exposición.
Por último, se elimina la tradición de enterrar a los papas en tres ataúdes: “uno de ciprés, un segundo de plomo y un tercero de roble y otro de madera”.

The coffin will be moved from the papal residence to St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday, where it will lie in state before his funeral, according to the Vatican. In a break with tradition, Pope Francis stated in his final will that he wished to be buried in a “simple” tomb in the ground in Rome’s Basilica of St. Mary Major, not in St. Peter’s Basilica.

The body has been placed in a single wooden coffin with a zinc interior and will be displayed directly in the open coffin, but not on a catafalque as it has been until now, nor will the papal staff be placed in the coffin during this display.
Finally, the tradition of burying popes in three coffins has been eliminated: “one of cypress, a second of lead, a third of oak, and a third of wood.”
