Miles de fieles comienzan a dar el último adiós al papa Francisco
Thousands of faithful begin to bid their final farewell to Pope Francis.
(LPL/EN) – Los miles de fieles que desde horas esperaban la apertura de la basílica de San Pedro para dar su último adiós al papa Francisco comenzaron a entrar a las 11.00 horas (9.00 GMT) de manera ordenada y poder detenerse algunos instantes ante el féretro.
La basílica permanecerá abierta este miércoles hasta la medianoche y mañana volverá a abrir a las 7:00 am, hora local, y hasta el viernes a las 7:00 pm cuando se cerrará para comenzar el rito del cierre del féretro.
Largas filas se comenzaron a formar ya desde primeras horas de la mañana en espera de que se abriese la basílica y muchos pudieron asistir al traslado del féretro desde la capilla de Santa Marta a San Pedro.
Los fieles pudieron acceder sólo después de que los cardenales, obispos y el personal del Vaticano le dieron su último adiós.
El féretro fue colocado frente a la tumba de San Pedro, enfrente del imponente baldaquino de Bernini, y se ha acordonado la zona para que las personas se sitúen a una determinada distancia.
El ataúd con los restos mortales de Francisco recorrió en una procesión la plaza de Santa Marta, la plaza de los Protomartires Romanos y atravesó el Arco de las Campanas hasta salir a la plaza de San Pedro y entrar en la Basílica Vaticana por la puerta central.
El féretro estaba precedido por los cardenales presentes en Roma, mientras que la cerraban las personas que más cerca estuvieron del pontífice, sus secretarios y sus asistentes.

(LPL/EN) -The thousands of faithful who had been waiting for hours for the opening of St. Peter’s Basilica to bid their final farewell to Pope Francis began entering in an orderly fashion at 11:00 a.m. (9:00 a.m. GMT) and were able to pause for a few moments before the coffin.
The basilica will remain open Wednesday until midnight and will reopen tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. local time, and until Friday at 7:00 p.m., when it will close for the closing of the coffin.
Long lines began to form early in the morning awaiting the basilica’s opening, and many were able to attend the transfer of the coffin from the Chapel of Santa Marta to St. Peter’s.
The faithful were allowed inside only after the cardinals, bishops, and Vatican staff had bid their final farewells.
The coffin was placed opposite St. Peter’s tomb, in front of Bernini’s imposing baldachin, and the area was cordoned off so that mourners could stand at a certain distance.
The coffin containing Francis’s remains was carried in a procession through Piazza Santa Marta, the Piazza dei Protomartiri Romano, and through the Arch of the Bells, exiting St. Peter’s Square and entering the Vatican Basilica through the central door.
The coffin was preceded by the cardinals present in Rome, while the closing ceremony was attended by those closest to the pontiff, his secretaries, and his assistants.
