(LPL/AFP) – Los congresistas republicanos quieren otorgar al presidente Donald Trump amplios poderes para cobrar un mínimo de 1.000 dólares a los migrantes que solicitan asilo en Estados Unidos.
Además, el comité judicial de la Cámara de Representantes, liderado por republicanos, considera aumentar el costo o crear nuevas tarifas para los migrantes.
Alrededor de 54.000 extranjeros recibieron asilo en Estados Unidos en 2023, según las últimas cifras de la Oficina de Estadísticas de Seguridad Nacional.
Los principales países de origen fueron Afganistán (donde 1.000 dólares equivalen al salario de dos años y medio) y Venezuela, donde se necesitarían aproximadamente tres meses para ganar esa cantidad.
“El presidente Trump y los republicanos de la Cámara de Representantes están determinados a restaurar la integridad migratoria, mejorar la seguridad nacional y controlar el estado administrativo descontrolado”, declaró el comité en un comunicado junto con la publicación del texto.
Los republicanos intentan incluir la migración en un proyecto de ley para sufragar varias medidas de la agenda de Trump, como los recortes fiscales, las restricciones a la migración y el aumento en la producción energética.
Parte del texto otorga a Trump más poderes para cobrar precios exorbitantes a los solicitantes de asilo y otros migrantes como condición para permanecer en Estados Unidos.
El proyecto de ley establece una cifra mínima de 1.000 dólares, lo que sería la primera vez en la historia de Estados Unidos que se cobra a los refugiados por solicitar asilo.
También establece una tarifa de 1.000 dólares para las personas con permisos temporales, 550 dólares cada seis meses para los permisos de trabajo y 1.500 dólares para solicitar el ajuste de estatus con el fin de obtener la famosa tarjeta verde ante un juez de migración.
Los republicanos quieren asimismo cobrar 8.500 dólares a cualquiera que quiera ejercer de patrocinador de un menor para liberarlo de la custodia federal. De ellos devolverían 5.000 dólares años después si el menor no es deportado por no comparecer ante un tribunal.
“Ese es un precio que detendría a casi todos los patrocinadores”, publicó en redes sociales Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, la oenegé American Immigration Council.
El proyecto también propone financiar a 10.000 nuevos agentes del Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE) e investigadores criminales del Departamento de Seguridad Interior (DHS).

In addition, the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee is considering raising the fee or creating new fees for migrants.
Approximately 54,000 foreigners were granted asylum in the United States in 2023, according to the latest figures from the Office of Homeland Security Statistics.
The top countries of origin were Afghanistan (where $1,000 is equivalent to two and a half years’ salary) and Venezuela, where it would take approximately three months to earn that amount.
“President Trump and House Republicans are determined to restore immigration integrity, enhance national security, and rein in the uncontrolled administrative state,” the committee said in a statement accompanying the release of the text. Republicans are seeking to include immigration in a bill to fund several of Trump’s agenda measures, such as tax cuts, immigration restrictions, and increased energy production.
Part of the text gives Trump more power to charge exorbitant prices to asylum seekers and other migrants as a condition of remaining in the United States.
The bill establishes a minimum fee of $1,000, which would be the first time in U.S. history that refugees have been charged for applying for asylum.
It also establishes a fee of $1,000 for people with temporary permits, $550 every six months for work permits, and $1,500 to apply for adjustment of status to obtain the famous green card before an immigration judge.
Republicans also want to charge $8,500 for anyone seeking to sponsor a minor to release them from federal custody. Of these, $5,000 would be returned years later if the minor is not deported for failing to appear in court.
“That’s a price that would stop almost all sponsors,” Aaron Reichlin-Melnick of the American Immigration Council posted on social media.
The bill also proposes funding 10,000 new Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and criminal investigators for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
