Antonio Espaillat, owner of Jet Set, speaks about the nightclub tragedy: «I’m the first one who wants to know what happened.»

Si yo no estaba, ella siempre estaba; y si ella no estaba, siempre estaba yo».

(LPL/EN) -Businessman Antonio Espaillat, owner of the Jet Set nightclub, stated that the first person who wants to know what happened is him.

«I happened to be on that trip; otherwise, I would have been there. Every Monday, I was there in my chair, always sitting, hanging out with all the customers,» Espaillat said.
In an interview with journalist Edith Febles, from the television program El Día, which airs on Telesistema 11, he specified that the last time he was there was two Mondays before that April 8th.

The owner of the business said it was very difficult for him not to attend the nightclub: «Normally, I would miss it if I wasn’t in the country, but I always went, and my sister; I mean, my sister and I were the ones who were always there. If I wasn’t there, she was always there; And if she wasn’t there, I was always there.»
Since its move 30 years ago, the Jet Set nightclub had plaster ceiling panels, which, according to Espaillat, often collapsed due to water accumulation from the air conditioners. This situation was considered normal, and no warning signs were ever identified because the plaster absorbed the water without deforming.

In the interview, the owner explained that the ceiling panels were frequently replaced by the club’s employees, without hiring specialized companies. On the day of the tragedy, April 8, some ceiling panels had also been replaced, although he doesn’t remember how many.

The building had already had leak problems since it was acquired in the 1980s, and the roof was never structurally inspected. On the rooftop, there were six air conditioning units and three water tanks to supply water to the bathrooms and kitchen area.

Espaillat recounted that since its inauguration, the power plant had been in a room adjacent to the building. That April 8, during a traditional Monday night party, the club’s ceiling collapsed, costing The lives of 232 people have been lost, including that of merengue singer Rubby Pérez, a close friend of the businessman.

He expressed his deep sorrow for the artist’s death and assured that if he had the opportunity to speak with his daughters, he would offer his condolences and understanding. He considered Rubby Pérez not only a symbol of merengue, but also a friend of decades.
On April 8, Espaillat recorded and published a video in which he said he had no words to express the pain caused by the tragedy.

«There are not enough words to express the pain caused by this event. What happened has been devastating for everyone,» he expressed.

On April 15, the businessman presented himself to justice as part of the Public Ministry’s investigation, which seeks to determine the causes of the collapse of the entertainment center’s roof.

Then, on April 19, the Attorney General’s Office took action following reports that Espaillat was taking steps to transfer assets into his name.

The prosecution reportedly interpreted this as a strategy to avoid compensating the hundreds of victims of the Jet Set nightclub collapse.
